GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — Police in coastal Mississippi say the body of a missing 5-year-old girl has been found in a vacant mobile home, and her death is being investigated as a homicide.

The Harrison County Coroner’s Office says an autopsy was underway Thursday afternoon on the body of Janaya Makayia Thompson.

Gulfport Police spokesman Sgt. Damon McDaniel says her body was found about 8:45 a.m. Thursday. He says the trailer home is about a five-minute walk from her family’s apartment.

McDaniel said in a text message that Coroner Gary Hargrove identified the child.

Police would not provide any information on a possible cause of death.

The child had last been seen in the parking lot outside the apartment about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
