OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha mayor and police chief say the city needs more law enforcement officers.
Mayor Jean Stothert plans to present a budget on Tuesday to the city council that includes money for new recruits. It’s unclear how much funding the mayor wants for new positions, but she says she wants to hire about 75 more officers by 2016.
The department currently has about 770 officers.
Stothert and Chief Todd Schmaderer say bolstering the ranks will reduce crime, improve response times and help staff special events. They say more police will help reduce gang violence.
