OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Prosecutors have charged another man with first-degree murder in the shooting death of an Omaha man.

19-year-old Jaquez Clifton has been charged with first-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony. He was ordered held without bail Monday.

An assistant prosecutor with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office says Clifton shot and killed 59-year-old Frank Sanders at his home on July 20.

Another man, 24-year-old Absalom Scott, also faces a first-degree murder charge in the case. Twenty-nine-year-old Rico Larry has been charged with being an accessory to felony murder.

Preliminary hearings for all three men are scheduled for Aug. 25. It is unclear if they have attorneys.

More Federal Aid Given to Nebraska for June Storms

femaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Additional federal aid is being made available to Nebraska for areas affected by recent severe weather.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said in a news release Monday that the money will supplement state and local recovery efforts for areas affected in early June by severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding. Federal aid was made available to other areas of the state earlier this month.

Federal funding is available to state and local governments, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations, for emergency work in Burt, Butler, Cass, Hamilton, Holt, Nemaha, Pawnee, Polk, Rock, Thurston, Valley, and Washington counties.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man has been given prison time for severely beating his infant son last year.

A district judge on Friday gave 23-year-old Anthony Souza four to five years in prison on a child abuse charge.

Police say Souza threw his six-month-old son into a bedroom in December, hitting him against a door frame and closet. The infant was found limp and unresponsive and spent several days in the hospital. The boy suffered several injuries including broken bones and skull fractures.

Souza pleaded no contest in May as part of a deal with prosecutors.

Nebraska Wheat Harvest Making Good Progress

usdaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska farmers are making good progress in the state’s wheat harvest thanks to recent dry weather.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Monday that 79 percent of Nebraska’s winter wheat crop had been harvested, which is only slightly behind the average of 83 percent.

About 74 percent of the state’s corn crop remains in good or excellent condition.

The USDA says 72 percent of the soybean crop is also in good or excellent condition.

Northwestern Coach: Union Push Unified Team

Big-Ten-LogoCHICAGO (AP) — No matter how this season unfolds, Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald insists there is no more unified team than his Wildcats.

He credits the push to unionize.

Fitzgerald says he’s “proud of the maturity” his players displayed as the story unfolded. He spoke Monday on the first day of the Big Ten’s two-day media event.

Northwestern is at the forefront of the movement, with former quarterback Kain Colter leading the push to form the first union for college athletes.

A regional director of the National Labor Relations Board ruled in March that Northwestern’s full scholarship players can bargain with the school as employees. Players voted in April on whether to form the first union for college athletes. The result is not known because the NLRB impounded the ballots.

Thomas Still Absent from Broncos Camp

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos star Demaryius Thomas is missing his seventh workout of training camp.

Coach John Fox had said Sunday he hoped to have Thomas back at practice Monday morning, but the wide receiver was apparently still making his way back from Georgia following the death of his grandmother.

Thomas caught a team-best 92 passes for 1,430 yards and 14 touchdowns last year. He also set a Super Bowl record with 13 receptions.

His agent and the Broncos have exchanged proposals on a long-term contract. General manager John Elway said he didn’t walk talks to drag on past the first week of August.

DeMarcus Ware, who bruised a leg Sunday, was among the nicked-up players held out of Monday morning’s practice.

FAA Proposes Fining Southwest Airlines $12M

faaWASHINGTON (AP) — The government is proposing a $12 million civil fine against Southwest Airlines for failing to comply in three separate cases with safety regulations related to repairs on Boeing 737 jetliners.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday that beginning in 2006 Southwest made “extreme makeover” alterations to eliminate potential cracking of the aluminum skin on 44 jetliners.

The FAA said an investigation determined that Southwest’s contractor, Aviation Technical Services Inc. of Everett, Washington, failed to follow proper procedures for replacing the fuselage as well as other work on the planes. The agency said all of the work was done under the supervision of Southwest Airlines.

The statement said Southwest returned the planes to service when they were not in compliance with regulations.

Southwest has 30 days to reply to the proposed fine.

Chiefs Offensive Line a Grab-Bag of Bodies in Training Camp

Kansas City Chiefs HelmetST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The presumptive favorite to win the starting right guard spot with the Kansas City Chiefs worked out with the third team on Monday. The guy who is challenging him for the spot slid over to center during another portion of the workout.

Rishaw Johnson and Zach Fulton are just the start of the offensive line shuffle.

After watching three linemen who started last season depart in free agency — all within hours of each other — the Chiefs are trying to cobble together some sort of protection for quarterback Alex Smith that can also manage to open up running lanes for Jamaal Charles during training camp.

And with lingering questions about the health of left tackle Eric Fisher and an ankle injury to starting right tackle Donald Stephenson, that job hasn’t gotten a whole lot easier.

Marketing Agreement an Obstacle in US Bid for 2024

olympicsCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — If Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco or Washington are picked to host the 2024 Olympics, one of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s first tasks will be to hand over millions in sponsorships to the victorious city’s new organizing committee.

It’s one of those costly facts of life of the Olympics thanks to the Joint Marketing Program Agreement that a country’s Olympic federation must sign when it puts a city up as a candidate to host the games.

The last two American bids, from New York and Chicago, included agreements that didn’t conform with the International Olympic Committee’s guidelines, which call for about 90 percent of the host federation’s domestic sponsorship to be channeled to the new organizing committee.

The USOC would likely seek a different arrangement for a 2024 bid.
