A 51-year-old North Platte man is facing a burglary charge after he allegedly forced his way into a home in order to collect on a debt.

At around 9:50 p.m., on July 25, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to a residence in the 700 block of South Chestnut Street on the report of a theft.

Upon arrival, a 59-year-old male told officers that Wade Harlow had came to his residence and forced his way past the man and into his home.

The man reported that Harlow was demanding that a friend of the homeowner pay him money that he owed him.  Harlow then allegedly grabbed two cordless drills, valued at around $250 each, and left with them.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, Harlow told the homeowner that he was “holding onto the drills” until he was paid.

At approximately 2:00 a.m., the investigating officer located Harlow’s vehicle parked in the Patriot Mobile Home Park, 2300 East Philip Avenue, and observed the two drills laying on the passenger side floorboard.

Contact was made with Harlow and, following further investigation, he was taken into custody.

Harlow was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center on a charge of felony burglary.

Baseball Hall of Fame Adds 6 Greats

national-baseball-hall-of-fCOOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — The Baseball Hall of Fame has added six new members who have taken their place among the greats of the game.

It was a big day for the Atlanta Braves, who saw former pitchers Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine enshrined along with longtime manager Bobby Cox. Those three were part of a dominating Braves era that saw the team win 14 straight division titles. Maddux and Glavine are 300-game winners and Cox is fourth on the all-time victory list.

No. 3 on that list is Tony LaRussa, who has also been inducted along with fellow managing great Joe Torre. LaRussa is a four-time manager of the year who won 12 division titles, six pennants and three World Series. Torre is fifth on the managerial wins list and captured 10 division titles, six AL pennants and four World Series with the Yankees.

Rock Beats Paper: Study Says Fist Bumps Spread Fewer Bacteria Than Handshakes or High-Fives

fist-bumpNEW YORK (AP) — When it comes to preventing the spread of germs, maybe the president is on to something with his fondness for fist bumps.

A new study found that a quick fist bump spreads only one-twentieth the amount of bacteria that a handshake does. That’s even better than a high-five, which passes along less than half the amount as a handshake.

What makes the fist bump more sanitary? The researchers say mostly it’s the smaller amount of surface area in contact between the two hands.

Researchers at Aberystwyth University in Wales did the study. It was published online Monday in the American Journal of Infection Control.

The fist bump has been popularized in recent years by athletes and by President Barack Obama.

Virus Drugmaker Fights Pediatricians’ New Advice

Medical-ChartCHICAGO (AP) — A drugmaker is clashing with pediatricians over new recommendations to limit use of a costly medicine for preventing serious lung problems in preemies and other high-risk children.

The dispute involves new American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines that say medical evidence shows the drug has limited benefits. The influential group says the drug is best suited for only very young preemies.

The drug is sold by MedImmune under the brand name Synagis (SIN’-uh-jis). MedImmune is fighting back with full-page newspaper ads that say the updated policy threatens the most vulnerable babies.

The drug is used to prevent problems linked with a common germ called RSV or respiratory syncytial (sin-SISH’-uhl) virus. Most kids get it but only mild cases with cold-like symptoms.

The new policy was published online Monday in Pediatrics.

It’s All Over But the Arguing in Sterling Trial

donald-sterlingLOS ANGELES (AP) — Only final arguments and a ruling remain in the trial to determine whether Donald Sterling’s estranged wife can sell the Los Angeles Clippers to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for $2 billion.

Lawyers for Sterling plan to argue Monday that Shelly Sterling had no right to make the deal with Ballmer, even though Donald Sterling had given her written authority to pursue a sale.

The attorneys also say she tricked Donald Sterling into taking mental exams that found he had signs of the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

That finding was sufficient for him to be removed as a trustee of the Sterling Family Trust and allow Shelly Sterling to move forward with the sale of the team.

Later in the process, however, Donald Sterling tried to stop the sale by dissolving the trust.
