Prison Sentencing Errors to Be Costly for Nebraska

ne-department-of-correctionsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska prison officials say the errors made in calculating sentences for hundreds of inmates will cost the state at least $4 million, but at least one lawmaker says the cost is likely to be higher.

The state Department of Correctional Services released a preliminary cost estimate on Friday.

The miscalculated sentences of nearly 600 people were discovered earlier this month after the Omaha World-Herald reported that the state was using a flawed formula in cases involving mandatory minimum sentences.

Officials estimate that correcting the sentences will cost the state about $4 million over the next decade and as much as $10 million through 2064.

But Omaha state Sen. Heath Mello, who leads the Appropriations Committee, says he thinks officials are understating the costs.

In his past six games, Santana is 14 for 23, including three doubles and 10 RBIs.

Ryan Raburn and Yan Gomes also homered for the Indians, who had lost six straight at Kauffman Stadium.

Fans Finally Get to See the AFC Champions

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are playing in front of their fans for the first time since the Super Bowl.

The team had to close its Dove Valley training facilities at training camp because of an ongoing $35 million construction project.

To accommodate their fans, the Broncos are holding three workouts at Sports Authority Field over the next week.

Sunday marked the first chance for fans to get to see Peyton Manning this summer along with the Broncos’ draft class and free agents T.J. Ward, Aqib Talib, DeMarcus Ware and Emmanuel Sanders.

Coach John Fox said, “I think our players are excited. Anytime they walk in there it’s such a great spot and we have such great fans. That obviously sparks them.”

Harrison’s 4 Hits Lead Pirates Past Rockies 7-5

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Josh Harrison had four hits, including a tiebreaking homer, to help the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies 7-5 on Sunday.

Gregory Polanco and Travis Snider also went deep for the Pirates, who avoided being swept in Colorado for the second straight season.

Harrison homered on the first pitch of the eighth to break a tie, and Polanco followed with his fifth of the season to make it 7-5.

Tony Watson (7-1) gave up a run in two innings of relief to get the win and Mark Melancon worked the ninth for his 19th save.

Harrison also had helped give the Pirates a 5-4 lead. In the sixth he swiped second but was caught in a rundown when he slid past the bag. He survived to reach third — giving him two stolen bases on the play — and scored on a pinch-hit double by Ike Davis to make it 5-4.

US Gas Prices Fall 9 Cents to $3.58

gas-cardCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — A national survey finds the average U.S. price of regular-grade gasoline has plummeted 9 cents a gallon over the past two weeks to $3.58.

That’s the largest drop this year.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday the decrease came despite a rise in crude-oil prices.

Lundberg says U.S. refiners, enjoying plentiful supplies, aggressively cut wholesale prices to chase sales.

Midgrade averages were $3.78, and premium averages were $3.93.

The U.S. average retail diesel price is down 4 cents per gallon, to $3.90.

The lowest average price Lundberg found in the lower 48 states was $3.23 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The highest was $4.03 in San Francisco.

The average price for a gallon of regular in Nebraska is $3.39.

The lowest average price in California was $3.86 in Sacramento.

Olympics Get Ready, Rugby Sevens is On the Way

rugby-sevensGLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — The road to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympic debut of rugby sevens took a lively detour on the weekend to the home of Scottish football’s Rangers.

Played before nearly 200,000 spectators over two days, the Commonwealth Games sevens tournament in a packed Ibrox Stadium featured family-friendly crowds, karaoke-style sing-a-longs and appreciative players who rounded the ground following their final games to thank the crowd for their support.

On the field, it was all action — seven players covering a wide swath of field where 15 is the norm in regular rugby— speedy backs offloading or deking their way around opponents to score as many tries and points as they can in two seven-minute halves.

Disco rugby maybe, but in Glasgow on the weekend, it was a huge hit.

American Doctor in Africa Gets Treatment for Ebola

samaritans-purseBOONE, N.C. (AP) — A spokeswoman for an aid organization says an American doctor is receiving intensive medical treatment in West Africa after he was infected with the deadly Ebola virus.

Melissa Strickland is a spokeswoman for North Carolina-based Samaritan’s Purse. She said Sunday that Dr. Kent Brantly was in stable condition, talking with his doctors and working on his computer while receiving care.

She cautions that Brantly is not out of the woods. She says patients have a better chance of survival if they receive treatment immediately after being infected, which Brantly did.

The highly contagious virus is one of the most deadly diseases in the world.

Brantly has been working with Samaritan’s Purse in Liberia since October 2013 as part of the group’s post-residency program for doctors. He is 33 years old.
