DETROIT (AP) — Ndamukong Suh is ready to start training camp — and he says any uncertainty about his contract shouldn’t be a distraction.

Veterans report to camp Sunday for the Detroit Lions. Suh is entering the final season of his contract, and as always, the spotlight will be on the two-time All-Pro when he takes the field this year. Suh says he doesn’t have a timetable for contract talks — and that his agent can handle that while he focuses on football.

The 27-year-old Suh went to Brazil with his father this offseason for the World Cup. Suh played soccer growing up, and the sport runs deep in his family.

Suh said he saw the U.S.-Portugal match, and he also went to see Cameroon play Brazil. Suh’s father was born in Cameroon.

Elderly Man Dies in Northeast Nebraska Crash

fatal-accidentBELDEN, Neb. (AP) — A 74-year-old Randolph man has died in a two-vehicle crash in the northeast corner of Nebraska.

Delbert Stevens died at the scene of the accident that occurred just before 11:30 a.m. Friday one mile west of Belden.

The Cedar County Sheriff’s Office says Stevens was driving a pickup eastbound on Highway 20 when the truck crossed the center line and collided head on with a westbound semi-trailer truck driven by a 23-year-old man from Canada.

Investigators say Stevens was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The semi driver was taken to a Norfolk hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Zebras Mussels Confirmed at Eastern Nebraska Lake

zebra-musselOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The presence of invasive zebra mussels has been confirmed at an Offutt Air Force Base lake south of Omaha.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says a federal wildlife specialist discovered live adult zebra mussels in Offutt Base Lake on May 1, while checking rocks in the shallow water.

The commission has now forbidden any water to be removed from the lake, including by bait buckets and coolers for caught fish.

The species can attach themselves to boat motors, bait buckets and other equipment and make their way from one body of water to another.

Once transferred, they can attach themselves to pipes or other structures, damaging boat motors and reducing the ability to draw water into facilities like water treatment and power plants.

Nebraska Prison Appeals Order on Killer’s Drawings

john-joubertLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska prison officials are appealing a judge’s order to give drawings made by an executed child serial killer to a former TV reporter and book author.

Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning filed the appeal Friday.

Last month, a judge ruled that the prison system must permit author Mark Pettit to inspect and reproduce the drawings.

Pettit is the author of “A Need to Kill: The True-Crime Account of John Joubert, Nebraska’s Most Notorious Serial Child Killer.” He has been trying for more than 25 years to get access to the drawings in which Joubert said he depicted his fantasies to kill again.

Joubert was executed in 1996 for the fatal stabbings of two Bellevue boys in 1983.

Browns’ Manziel: ‘I’ve Made Rookie Mistakes’

cleveland-brownsBEREA, Ohio (AP) — Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel says he “made some rookie” mistakes during the offseason and vowed to be focused on just football in the future.

Speaking on the eve of Cleveland’s first training camp practice, Manziel briefly addressed his behavior during the offseason when photos of him partying around the country were a weekly occurrence. Manziel said he has spoken to Browns coach Mike Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer and “we’ve been on the same page.” Manziel said he spoke them about a photo of him holding a rolled up $20 bill, but he provided no other details.

Manziel said he wants to represent the Browns in a “positive manner and a positive light.”

The former college star enters his first camp as Cleveland’s No. 2 quarterback behind Brian Hoyer.

Butler’s Pinch-Hit HR Lifts Royals Over Indians

royalsbigKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pinch-hitter Billy Butler’s two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning sent the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Indians 6-4 Friday night for their fourth straight win.

Butler connected against John Axford, sending a drive over the Royals’ bullpen in left field. Butler was hitting just .200 in his previous 20 games with two RBIs before pinch-hitting for Raul Ibanez.

Kelvin Herrera (2-2) pitched a scoreless eighth and Aaron Crow worked around a leadoff double in the ninth to earn his second save in four chances.

Royals closer Greg Holland, who had pitched in the three previous games, was unavailable.

Carlos Carrasco (3-4) gave up a single to Salvador Perez before Butler’s home run.

Perez, who had three hits, and Mike Moustakas had back-to-back home runs to open the second.

Anderson Leads Rockies Over Pirates 8-1

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Brett Anderson pitched effectively into the seventh inning for his first win in more than a year and the Colorado Rockies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-1 on Friday night.

Carlos Gonzalez homered and Josh Rutledge had two hits and drove in four runs for Colorado, which has won consecutive games for just the second time in the last six weeks.

Anderson (1-3) had not won since beating Houston on April 7, 2013, in his last start for Oakland. He spent four months on the disabled list and moved to the A’s bullpen when he returned.

He was winless in three April starts for Colorado before a broken left index finger put him on the shelf for 81 games. Friday was his third start since coming back and he allowed just two hits into the seventh inning before leaving with a 1-0 lead after issuing a one-out walk to Russell Martin.

Son: Joe Paterno Feared Wrongly Accusing Sandusky

PaternoHARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A son of former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno writes in a new book that his father said he hadn’t informed the coaching staff about allegations Jerry Sandusky might be a child molester because he wasn’t sure whether they were true.

Jay Paterno writes in “Paterno Legacy: Enduring Lessons from the Life and Death of My Father” that Joe Paterno said he didn’t want to accuse somebody of something he didn’t witness or know as fact. He says he had the conversation with his father the day after Joe Paterno was fired.

The book takes a defensive tone toward the famed coach, who lost his job shortly after Sandusky’s arrest in November 2011 and died of liver cancer three months later.

Johnny-Manziel-Texas-A&MBEREA, Ohio (AP) — With No. 2 jerseys ringing the field, Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel has begun his quest to win Cleveland’s starting job.

Manziel is taking part in his first NFL training camp practice on Saturday and thousands of fans have come out for an up-close look at the sensation nicknamed Johnny Football. Fans began lining up outside the Browns’ training complex at 5 a.m. to secure the closest possible spots near the practice fields.

Manziel, the former Heisman Trophy winner who was drafted in the first round by the Browns, walked onto the field at 9:22 a.m. as House of Pain’s “Jump Around” blared through loudspeakers.

On Friday, Manziel, who will battle Brian Hoyer to be the starter, acknowledged he made “some rookie mistakes” with an offseason filled with partying.

Kevin Love Withdraws from Team USA

USA-BasketballKevin Love has withdrawn from this summer’s USA Basketball roster because of his uncertain NBA status, leaving the Americans without one of their most experienced international players.

Team USA announced the decision on Saturday. Love, who won gold medals at the 2012 Olympics and 2010 world championship and was one of the first players to commit to play this summer, told USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo that he would be unavailable for training camp that starts Monday.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are considering trading Love and the Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to acquire the three-time All-Star to pair with LeBron James. A trade could fall apart if Love were to play and be injured.

Colangelo says that the U.S. “can only look to the players we have available.”
