Seahawks Start Atop AP Pro32 Rankings

seattle-seahawksNEW YORK (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks start the preseason right where they ended last season, as the No. 1 team in the AP Pro32 NFL power rankings.

In balloting by 12 media members who regularly cover the NFL, the top three teams in the AP Pro32 were the Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos.

The Super Bowl champion Seahawks grabbed 11 first-place votes on Tuesday and had 383 points.

Their NFC West rival from the Bay Area earned the other first-place vote and had 360 points.

The Broncos and New England Patriots, who faced each other in the AFC championship game, followed at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

Tied for fifth were the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints.

Rounding out the bottom of the poll were the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and, at No. 32, the Oakland Raiders.

Elway Hits the Greens on Eve of Training Camp

John-Elway-Denver-BroncosCHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. (AP) — The greens and not the greenbacks are what held John Elway’s attention on the eve of training camp.

The Denver Broncos boss spent his last hours of summer vacation playing a nine-hole exhibition Tuesday at Cherry Hills Country Club, site of this year’s BMW Championship, in a friendly foursome that included defending champion Zach Johnson.

Before teeing off, Elway told The Associated Press he hopes to get a long-term deal done with star receiver Demaryius Thomas within the next two weeks.

Elway would have preferred to reach agreement with Thomas before the Broncos report for training camp Wednesday, but he said the sides have exchanged proposals and “we’re a ways apart right now.”

Elway added that he doesn’t want talks to drag beyond the start of the preseason Aug. 7, when Denver hosts Seattle.

Georgia Tech Dismisses 3 Players, Suspends Another

georgia-techATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Tech has dismissed wide receiver Anthony Autry and defensive linemen Darius Commissiong and Travin Henry and suspended defensive back Lynn Griffin for the first two games of the 2014 season. Georgia Tech says Tuesday’s moves were due to unspecified rules violations.

In March, Georgia Tech announced Autry was suspended for two games for violating the school’s conduct policy.

Autry, a sophomore from Roswell, missed the 2013 season with an injury after catching three passes for 117 yards in 2012.

Commissiong is a redshirt freshman. Henry, a sophomore, began his career as a wide receiver before moving to defense this spring.

Griffin, a sophomore, had nine tackles in 12 games in 2013.

Bulls Sign Creighton’s Doug McDermott

Doug McDermott Creighton BluejaysCHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Bulls say they have signed Doug McDermott, their first-round draft pick and last season’s college player of the year.

Terms of the deal involving the 6-foot-8 forward from Creighton weren’t released.

The Bulls acquired 22-year-old McDermott after Denver drafted him with the 11th overall pick, then quickly traded him to Chicago.

As a Creighton senior last season, McDermott averaged a nation-leading 26.7 points, becoming one of eight players in NCAA history to score more than 3,000 career points.

The Bulls also announced Tuesday’s signing of free-agent guard Aaron Brooks. The 6-foot, six-year NBA veteran last season averaged 9 points while splitting time with Denver and Houston. Terms were not disclosed.

Rivers Will Quit If Sterling Remains Owner

NBA-BasketballLOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Clippers interim CEO Richard Parsons says coach Doc Rivers has told him he’ll quit if Donald Sterling remains owner of the team. Parsons made the statement while testifying in a trial to determine whether Sterling’s wife Shelly Sterling can sell the team for $2 billion to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

The NBA has sought to force out Sterling since soon after racist statements emerged on recordings in April.

Rivers, who is black, has said he had heard from other Clippers business employees that they didn’t think they would be able to work for Sterling under the circumstances.

Sterling has denied he is a racist from the witness stand and vows he’ll never sell the team, claiming he is the victim of illegally recorded conversations that invaded his privacy.

Chargers, Woodhead Agree to 2-Year Extension

NFL: San Diego Chargers-Training CampSAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers agreed to a two-year contract extension with running back Danny Woodhead.

Woodhead signed a two-year contract when he joined the Chargers as an unrestricted free agent from New England in March 2013. His new contract runs through the 2016 season.

“Danny is an integral part of our offense,” general manager Tom Telesco said. “His work ethic and on-field production were key elements last year. We look forward to having him be a part of the Chargers organization into the future.”

Woodhead is coming off a career year. He had career highs of 76 catches (second on the team), 605 yards and six touchdowns. He ranked first among all running backs in touchdown catches and ranked second in receptions and yards receiving.

Paterno Son, Other Former Assistant Sue Penn State

PaternoSTATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Jay Paterno and another former assistant football coach at Penn State are suing the university over how they were dismissed from the staff when Bill O’Brien was hired as head coach two years ago.

Paterno and William Kenney filed a lawsuit Monday in Philadelphia federal court that seeks more than $1 million.

Both served under Paterno’s father, Joe Paterno, before he was fired soon after retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with child molestation in late 2011.

The coaches say they’ve been unfairly linked to the Sandusky scandal, making it difficult to find comparable coaching jobs.

Kenney is now an assistant at Western Michigan. Paterno is a writer and consultant.

A Penn State spokeswoman says it’s common for head coaches to pick their own assistants but isn’t offering more comment.

7 Ex-NFL Players Appeal Terms of Concussion Deal

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Seven former professional football players are challenging a tentative class action settlement of NFL concussion claims.

Their appeal echoes their previous complaints some players won’t be fairly compensated under the settlement, which would cover nearly 20,000 retired players for 65 years.

Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody has granted preliminary approval pending a November fairness hearing. Her approval came after the NFL agreed to remove the $765 million cap to ensure the fund doesn’t run out.

The group appealing the judge’s decision includes 2008 Pro Bowl player Sean Morey, now Princeton University’s sprint football coach.

Lawyers who negotiated the deal say Monday’s appeal to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court is premature. They say they fear it will delay final approval and leave families in need waiting longer for their awards.
