Thumb Surgery Set for Creighton’s Austin Chatman

Creighton-Jays-BasketballOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton point guard Austin Chatman will have surgery to repair a ligament in his right thumb and is expected to be fully recovered before the season.

The school said Tuesday that Chatman would wear a cast for two months.

Chatman is the only returning starter for a team that has made the NCAA tournament three straight years. Chatman has started 71 straight games and averaged 8.1 points as a junior. He’s the Bluejays’ top returning scorer.

Chatman scored 10 or more points in six of the last seven games and was named to the Big East all-tournament team.

LSU Freshman Tackle Injured Punching Glass

lsuBATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU freshman defensive tackle Trey Lealaimatafao might not be able to play this season after he injured his arm punching through glass in the Tigers’ weight room.

LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette says Lealaimatafao was hospitalized Monday to treat a deep cut to his arm. School officials have not offered further details on why the player punched through glass, the severity of the injury or the effect it could have on Lealaimatafao’s career.

The 6-foot, 300-pound Lealaimatafao was a coveted recruit who was expected to compete for playing time immediately.

As a senior at San Antonio’s Warren High School, he was credited with 53 tackles, seven sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He was honored as a U.S. Army All-American.

Tour de France Heads to Pyrenees in Stage 16

tour-de-franceCARCASSONNE, France (AP) — Vincenzo Nibali is in the yellow jersey as the Tour de France peloton set off on the longest stage, into the Pyrenees.

The Italian holds a lead of more than 4½ minutes over second-place Alejandro Valverde of Spain.

The 237.5-kilometer (147-mile) Stage 16 from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon features an ascent up the super-tough Port de Bales.

Valverde won a stage in the 2012 Tour that had a similar climb over the Port de Bales and a finish downhill.

Before the stage, the Lampre-Merida team said world champion Rui Costa would not start due to pneumonia. The Portuguese rider had been in 13th place, about 13 minutes behind Nibali.

Sale Pitches White Sox Past Royals 3-1

kc-royalsCHICAGO (AP) — Chris Sale pitched seven effective innings in his first outing since the All-Star break and Adam Dunn had two RBIs and scored a run to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 3-1 victory over the slumping Kansas City Royals on Monday night.

Sale (9-1) wasn’t at his best, allowing seven hits and a walk in seven innings, but he worked out of jams in the fourth and sixth innings. He struck out eight and now has allowed three runs or less in 14 of his 15 starts this season. Jake Petricka pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

Dunn went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks as the White Sox for the fourth time in six games.

Danny Valencia went 1-for-2 with a RBI for Kansas City, which has dropped four straight and seven of eight. Jeremy Guthrie (5-9) gave up three runs on five hits in six innings.

Desmond Lifts Nationals to 7-2 Win Over Rockies

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Ian Desmond tied a career high with five hits, including a two-run homer, and Doug Fister threw effectively into the sixth to help the Washington Nationals beat the sinking Colorado Rockies 7-2 on Monday night.

The 6-foot-8 Fister (9-2) — all “elbows and knees” as Charlie Blackmon described him — allowed nine hits before being pulled with two outs in the sixth after running into trouble.

Desmond had four singles — including one off the arm of reliever LaTroy Hawkins in the ninth — to go with his 17th homer of the season.

Franklin Morales (5-5) surrendered four runs — three earned — in six innings.

Ben Paulsen had two hits and drove in a run in his major league debut for the Rockies, who’ve lost six straight.

Pyeongchang’s 2018 Olympic Committee Faced Audit

olympicsSEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean officials say the organizing committee for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang has been under investigation over its preparations for the games.

Tuesday’s confirmation by the Seoul-based Audit and Inspection came one day after the resignation of organizing committee chief Kim Jin-sun.

Kim stepped down Monday, saying new leadership is needed to complete preparation for the Olympics. South Korean media have reported he was fired by the government over poor preparations for the games.

Audit officials say the weeks-long inspection of the committee that ended on July 11 looked at financing and management.

Broncos DB Ward Has Hearing on Assault Charge Delayed

DENVER (AP) — A court hearing for Broncos safety T.J. Ward on charges stemming from an incident at a strip club has been delayed until next month.

Ward appeared in a Denver courtroom with his attorney Abraham Hutt Tuesday morning. Hutt asked the judge for more time because of evidence he just received. The hearing was delayed until Aug. 4.

Ward faces misdemeanor assault and disturbing the peace charges for allegedly throwing a glass mug at a female bartender May 10 at PT’s All Nude Club. He has pleaded not guilty.

The 27-year-old signed a four-year, $22.5 million deal with Denver this spring. He is a major component of Denver’s defensive makeover this offseason following the AFC champions’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

Ward and his attorney left court without comment.

Death of Baby Killed by Dog Ruled an Accident

police-lights-redDAYTON, Ohio (AP) — The death of a 7-month-old Indiana boy who was attacked and killed by a dog in Ohio has been ruled an accident.

The Montgomery County coroner’s office says in its preliminary findings from Monday’s autopsy that Jonathon Quarles Jr., of Indianapolis, died of blunt force injuries. Police say his step-grandmother was watching him for the day when her dog attacked and killed him Sunday.

Police Lt. Wendy Stiver says the dog was removed by an animal control officer and was being held Monday. Authorities say it was unclear why the dog attacked and are investigating.

Police say the dog registered at the step-grandmother’s address was identified as an American Staffordshire terrier.

A June police report shows a dog registered at that address allegedly attacked and injured another dog.

Lincoln Police Investigate Copper Wire Theft

Copper_theftLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Police say they believe four men stole copper wire valued at $26,000 from a south Lincoln construction site.

A foreman at the Aventine apartment complex discovered Friday that someone had cut the lock to a storage container and made off with electrical wire

Police officer Katie Flood says workers at Alter Metal Recycling called police Friday afternoon to report four men unloading wire they recognized as stolen. Officers arrived and found three men still at the scrap metal business. A fourth suspect turned himself in to police the next day. Online court records do not yet reflect charges have been filed.

Flood says investigators are trying to find out if the men are responsible for other thefts at the job site.

Season Ends for First Nationals Seniors

first-nationalsThe season has ended for the North Platte First Nationals following a 9-6 loss to Hastings Monday night.

The First Nationals held a three-run lead for nearly four innings, until a two-run home run by Alex Panganiban brought Hastings within one run in the fifth.

Hastings went on to add two more runs is the sixth, and the game was tied at six heading into the ninth inning.

Hastings would put three runs on the board in the ninth, and the First Nationals were unable to answer.

With the win, Hastings advances to the championship game against Kearney, which will be played  today at 4:00 p.m., at Bill Wood Field.

The district champion will advance to the National Division State Tournament in Grand Island, and the runner-up will move on to the American Division State Tournament in Omaha.

Hastings will need to beat Kearney twice to win the district.
