Missouri Mom, Daughter Fatally Injured in Nebraska

fatal-accidentSEWARD, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a Missouri woman and her 11-year-old daughter have been fatally injured in a southeast Nebraska accident.

The Seward County Sheriff’s Office says the accident occurred around 6:45 a.m. Friday on Interstate 80. The office says a westbound car veered left across the median, across the eastbound lanes and down an embankment, where it struck the bottom.

The Sheriff’s Office says the driver was flown to a Lincoln hospital but soon died there. She identified as 29-year-old Nell (Renee) Jorgensen. Her daughter, 11-year-old Morgan Smith, was pronounced at the accident scene. They were from Hannibal, Missouri, and had been headed to a family reunion in Wyoming.

Jorgensen’s 4-year-old son also was in the car. He was treated for minor injuries.

Alcohol Appears to Be Factor in Crash Near Wallace

Investigators say alcohol appears to be a factor in a Friday evening crash near Wallace.

According to a news release, deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an accident at mile marker 44 on Highway 23, near the Perkins/Lincoln County line, at around 9:40 p.m.

It was reported that a vehicle had rolled, and the driver was injured.

Deputies identified the driver as 32-year-old Moses Salgado Gomez, of Wallace.

An investigation showed that Gomez was traveling westbound on Highway 23, when his vehicle drifted off the road toward that north.  Authorities say it appears Gomez over-corrected and traveled into the south ditch, causing his vehicle to roll.

Investigators don’t believe Gomez was wearing a seatbelt, and they say alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.

Gomez was transported to Great Plains Health by Wallace Rescue for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Officials say charges may be filed, pending the results of a blood test.

NP Clerks Cited for Selling Tobacco to Minors

north_platte_patchSeveral employees at North Platte businesses have been cited for selling tobacco products to minors.

On July 2, officers from the North Platte Police Department conducted compliance checks throughout the city to ensure employees responsible for the sale of tobacco products were asking for proper identification and refusing to sell to minors.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, the checks are conducted multiple times each year, and are a tool to identify tobacco retail establishments that sell tobacco to underage youth.

Both the United States Food and Drug Administration and Nebraska state law require tobacco vendors to be licensed, and prohibit the sale of tobacco to anyone under the age of 18.

NPPD investigators, in coordination with Community Connections/Tobacco Free Lincoln County, supervised a 17-year-old male juvenile volunteer as he entered 17 local businesses.

Employees at two of the 17 random locations were cited for selling to the juvenile: 29-year-old Misty M. Crouse, Casey’s, 2421 Rodeo Road, and 71-year-old Marilyn M. Kohl, Wicked Fast Cenex, 1020 North Jeffers.

Brown said both were cited for sale of tobacco to minors, a Class III misdemeanor.

Aaron Hernandez Protests Airing of Court Chats

aaron-hernandezBOSTON (AP) — Lawyers for former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez are protesting the broadcasting of chats Hernandez had with his defense team during courtroom hearings.

Attorney James Sultan filed a motion Monday in Bristol Superior Court, where Hernandez is charged in the 2013 killing of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd.

Sultan said that during two hearings this month, a private conversation between Hernandez and his lawyers, and a separate conversation between Hernandez’s lawyers, were broadcast live over the Internet. The motion doesn’t describe the contents of the conversations.

Sultan said the broadcast of the conversations violates rules the state’s highest court has established for electronic recording of court proceedings.

Sultan asks the court to “take prompt action” to prevent the broadcasting of private conversations between Hernandez and his lawyers.
