SD Woman Recognized for Role in Baseball History

baseball_bat_mitt_gloveYANKTON, S.D. (AP) — A woman recognized as baseball’s first female professional umpire has been inducted into the Yankton College Alumni Hall of Fame.

Amanda Clement was only 16 when she was paid to umpire a semipro game in Hawarden, Iowa, in 1904 when the hired umpire didn’t show up. She did well enough that she was offered work in future games.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum says Clement drew large crowds to games throughout the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska.

Clement was inducted into the Yankton College Alumni Hall of Fame on Saturday. She previously was inducted into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library maintains a file on her.

Red Cross: Stay Safe When Temperatures Soar

red-cross-logo-new-2013Dangerously hot weather is predicted for Nebraska and Iowa, and the American Red Cross reminds everyone of the steps they should take to stay safe when the temperatures rise.

“In recent years there have been more deaths related to the heat than to all other weather events,” said Tina Labellarte, Region CEO. “There are steps people can take to stay safe and beat the heat.”

HEAT SAFETY

  • Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
  • Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
  • Take frequent breaks if working outdoors.
  • Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
  • Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat. Ensure they have water and a shady place to rest.
  • Eat small meals and eat more often.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.

Excessive heat can lead to sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To help avoid problems, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and limit drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

If someone is experiencing heat cramps in the legs or abdomen, get them to a cooler place, have them rest, lightly stretch the affected muscle and replenish their fluids with a half a glass (about 4 ounces) of cool water every 15 minutes.

If a person is exhibiting signs of heat exhaustion (cool, moist, pale or flushed skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness exhaustion), move them to a cooler place, remove or loosen tight clothing and spray the person with water or apply cool, wet cloths or towels to the skin. Fan the person. If they are conscious, give small amounts of cool water to drink. Make sure the person drinks slowly. Watch for changes in condition. If the person refuses water, vomits or begins to lose consciousness, call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number.

HEAT STROKE IS LIFE-THREATENING. Signs include hot, red skin which may be dry or moist; changes in consciousness; vomiting; and high body temperature. Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number immediately if some shows signs of heat stroke. Move the person to a cooler place. Quickly cool the person’s body by immersing them up to their neck in cold water if possible. Otherwise, douse or spray the person with cold water, or cover the person with cold, wet towels or bags of ice.

The Red Cross also has steps pet owners should take to keep their furry friends safe during hot weather.

Clippers’ Future on the Line as Probate Trial Resumes

Chris-Paul-Clippers-Los-AngLOS ANGELES (AP) — The probate trial on the future of the Los Angeles Clippers is resuming Monday.

The trial is dealing with whether a deal negotiated by Donald Sterling’s estranged wife to sell the team for $2 billion is authorized under a Sterling family trust.

Sterling agreed to the sale but then tried to revoke consent in spite of a signed letter instructing his wife Shelly Sterling to sell for the highest price she could get.

The court action to resolve the matter has been under way since last month but was in recess for a week.

With three days of hearings ahead, Donald Sterling’s lawyers suggested they would call the battling couple back to the witness stand separately to address unanswered questions.

Florida Town Stunned by News of Police KKK Ties

florida-department-of-law-eFRUITLAND PARK, Fla. (AP) — Residents of a small, central Florida town say they’re shocked and disgusted by the recent disclosure that two members of its police force are accused of being members of the Ku Klux Klan.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement last week released a report saying Fruitland Park Deputy Chief David Borst and Officer George Hunnewell were Klan members. Borst denies being a member.

Borst resigned and Hunnewell was fired last week. A third Fruitland Park officer resigned in 2010 after his Klan ties became public.

A researcher with the Southern Poverty Law Center says it’s extremely rare nowadays to find police officers who are Klan members.

Cases the officers worked on also are under scrutiny. On Friday, prosecutors dismissed three cases — two traffic offenses and a misdemeanor battery.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Major league batting leader Troy Tulowitzki was out of the Colorado Rockies’ lineup against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, a day after hurting a leg.

The Rockies shortstop had a cramp in the tensor fascia latae of his left thigh while running out an infield grounder Saturday night. He is day to day.

Tulowitzki is batting .340 with a major league-best .434 on-base percentage.

With the score 3-all, Matt Belisle (2-6) relieved and Josh Harrison worked out a seven-pitch walk leading off the seventh. Harrison stole second and scored on a single by McCutchen, who then was caught stealing second. Walker followed with his 14th homer.

Jameis Winston: ‘I Learned from My Mistakes’

jameis-winstonGREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Jameis Winston would rather look to the season ahead as the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback for reigning national champion Florida State. He also knows he has to answer questions about his off-field conduct.

The sophomore said he understands “what it is to be a leader” and he’s working to “hold myself to that standard.”

Winston was investigated for sexual assault during last season. A prosecutor in Tallahassee, Florida, decided in December not to charge him due to a lack of evidence and gaps in the accuser’s story.

Then in April, he was cited for walking out of a supermarket without paying for crab legs and crawfish.

Winston says he has “learned from my mistakes” and is focusing on the season.
