Storm Introduce Premium Season Ticket Option

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm have introduced a new premium season ticket option for fans who wish to receive an added value as a season subscriber.

The premium option includes an all-inclusive meal plan that will not be available in the Viaero Event Center’s public concessions. The meal will be served in an exclusive area that is only open to premium subscribers.

“We wanted to bring something of this value to Storm fans in Central Nebraska, both existing and new,” said Storm President Greg Shea. “This level of ticket is a trend in the sports business and is showing up at all levels. We also believe that this form of ticket in an exclusive setting provides more than just a game experience, it offers a business-to-business setting.”

With a rotating menu each game, the meal will include one drink of the ticket holder’s choice. Options will include spirits, draft beer or soft drink.

For additional information and to purchase the new premium season ticket, please contact Dustin Favinger in the Viaero Event Center Box Office by calling 308-338-8144.

The Storm’s full 60-game schedule for the 2014-15 USHL season is posted on the team’s website, stormhockey.com.

Tri-City will host the Sioux Falls Stampede to open their home schedule on Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The Storm’s full promotional schedule and single game ticket information will be released later this summer.

Rockies Owner Says He’s Sorry for Prickly Emails

Dick Monfort
Dick Monfort

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort says he’s sorry for his testy reactions to disgruntled fans, including telling one of them that maybe Denver doesn’t deserve a Major League Baseball team anymore.

In a statement released by the club Friday, Monfort said he has no intention of moving the team and formally apologized for his prickly email replies.

In a series of responses to fans unhappy with the bad baseball they’ve been witnessing, Monfort suggested they not come out to Coors Field if they’re that mad and suggested that Denver might not deserve a team.

Royals Activate OF Aoki, Option INF Colon to Omaha

Nori Aoki
Nori Aoki

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals activated outfielder Nori Aoki from the disabled list and optioned infielder Christian Colon to Triple-A Omaha before Kansas City’s game Friday night against Detroit.

Aoki had been sidelined since June 21 with a strained left groin. He was 1 for 10 during a three-game rehab assignment for Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Colon was 4 for 12 with two doubles and a triple in his first big league stint.

Where Aoki will fit back in remains to be seen. Jarrod Dyson and Lorenzo Cain have played well since he has been out, and Aoki could eventually platoon in right field.

He was starting Friday night, but that was partly because left fielder Alex Gordon remains out with a sprained right wrist. Dyson was starting in his place.

Gold Medalist Burroughs Hired As Assistant Coach

Jordan-Burroughs-Wrestling-Nebraska Wrestling Head Coach Mark Manning announced the hiring of Husker legend and Olympic Gold Medalist Jordan Burroughs as an assistant coach for the team on Friday.

“We are pleased to announce Jordan as one of my top assistants,” Manning said. “Jordan is one of the best wrestlers in the world and his accomplishments speak for themselves. We want him to continue to win World and Olympic titles until he completes his career. Jordan and his wife Lauren have made a commitment to be a part of Nebraska Athletics for a very long time. I along with the wrestlers and staff are glad to have the influence, mentorship and knowledge that Jordan brings to Nebraska wrestling. He has been a part of Nebraska wrestling for the last eight years and will continue to be a tremendous ambassador for the University of Nebraska.”

Burroughs previously served on the Nebraska wrestling staff as an administrative assistant for the 2012-13 season. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in sociology in May 2011.

“This is a huge stepping stone for my career and for Nebraska wrestling,” Burroughs said. “These are great facilities, people and tradition, and I’m extremely happy to continue to be a part of it. Now I get to look at things from the inside-out, whereas before it was from the outside-in. I want us to win team championships.”

A native of Sicklerville, N.J., Burroughs joins the staff in the midst of one of the most successful international freestyle wrestling careers in U.S. history. In addition to claiming the 74-kilogram Olympic Gold Medal at the 2012 Games in London, England, Burroughs won a pair of FILA World Championships in 2011 and 2013. He is also the three-time defending U.S. Open champion and two-time reigning World Cup champion.

Burroughs has earned several other titles during his post-collegiate career, including the 2011 Pan American Championships, 2011 U.S. World Team Trials, 2012 Olympic Trials, 2013 Alexander Medved Championships and 2013 Stephan Sargsyan Championships. In addition, he won his first 69 matches on the senior circuit.

Following the IOC’s initial recommendation to drop wrestling from the Olympics in February 2013, Burroughs became a key advocate to keeping the sport in the Games. In September 2013, the decision was overturned and wrestling will remain in the Olympics.

In 2011, Burroughs completed his decorated collegiate career with a second national title and claimed the Hodge Trophy Award. He went 36-0 as a senior at 165 pounds and also captured 2011 InterMat Wrestler-of-the-Year honors.

Burroughs’ first NCAA crown came in 2009, when he posted a perfect 35-0 record at 157 pounds. In 2009-10, his season was cut short by a torn PCL and LCL after racing to a 7-0 start.

The three-time All-American finished third at the 2008 NCAA Championships with a 34-6 record. He won a Big 12 title during the same season and added conference crowns in 2009 and 2011. Burroughs completed his college career with a 128-20 record, the fourth-most victories in school history. He also holds the fifth-best career winning percentage in Nebraska history at .865.

Court Ruling Favors NPPD Over Irrigators

nppdOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld a decision favoring a public power district’s right to water over those of farmers and ranchers along northern Nebraska’s Niobrara River.

The case stems from the Nebraska Public Power District’s 2007 decision to exercise its senior water rights to the Niobrara River after years of drought. The district said it needed the water to produce power at Spencer Dam, which it owns. Farmers and ranchers along the river sued when the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources ordered them to shut off their irrigation pumps that year.

In a majority opinion Friday, the state’s high court dismissed irrigators’ argument that the power district gave up water rights it acquired in the 1940s by not exercising them before 2007.

Council: US Economic Growth to Outpace Nebraska’s

Nebraska-Economic-Forecasting-Advisory-BoardLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A state business council predicts that Nebraska’s economy will slow enough this year for the rest of the nation to catch up.

The Nebraska Business Forecast Council says the U.S. economy as a whole will outpace Nebraska’s for the remaining months of 2014. Nebraska has enjoyed strong growth in recent years in farming and home construction.

The council says Nebraska will see stable farm income and relatively small increases in non-farm employment and income. The U.S. economy is expected to grow by more than 3 percent before the end of the year, before moderating in 2015 and 2016.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln economist Eric Thompson says the shift is partly due to slower population growth in Nebraska and the state’s already-strong labor market, which is less in need of recovery.

Officials: Man Loses Fingertips on Disney Ride

hollywood-studiosLAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Officials say a tourist from the United Kingdom lost two fingertips on his right hand while riding on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Florida.

The incident happened Thursday morning.

Bo Jones of the Reedy Creek Fire Department said the man lost the tips of his ring and pinky fingers and was taken to a hospital. His name was not released and his condition wasn’t available.

Officials say it was unclear how the incident happened.

Disney officials stopped the ride and checked it out. The ride was confirmed safe and reopened later Thursday.

Nebraska Service Provider Seeks Bankruptcy Shield

community-action-of-nebraskaGERING, Neb. (AP) — A western Nebraska nonprofit corporation that provides social services says it is filing for bankruptcy protection from its creditors.

The agency is Gering-based Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska. It runs more than 45 programs, including Head Start and a medical clinic. Its money comes from fees, grants, fundraising and government sources.

Interim executive director Margo Hartman says the intention is “to get this into a stable spot and keep providing services.”

The Chapter 11 filing will let the corporation reorganize its debts. Hartman says there would be no immediate effect on employees or services but says some programs eventually could be eliminated if they aren’t financially viable.

The agency’s financial setbacks are blamed on federal funding problems, high claims for its self-funded insurance program and financial reporting issues.

Judge Mulls Diagnosis on Convicted Omaha Killer

Nikko Jenkins
Nikko Jenkins

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Experts have provided to a judge diverging viewpoints on whether a man convicted of killing four people in Omaha is mentally ill or faking it.

Judge Peter Bataillon (buh-TAL’-yuhn) had ordered mental tests for 27-year-old Nikko Jenkins to determine whether Jenkins would be competent to understand court proceedings next month on his possible death sentence.

On Thursday a defense psychiatrist testified at a hearing that Jenkins suffers a form of schizophrenia and perhaps a bipolar disorder. A prosecution psychiatrist said Jenkins acts out and is lying about his mental state.

The judge didn’t making a ruling on Thursday.

Jenkins is awaiting sentencing for the August 2013 deaths of Curtis Bradford, Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz, Juan Uribe-Pena and Andrea Kruger.
