No Players Taken in NFL’s Supplemental Draft

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — None of the four eligible players were taken in the NFL’s supplemental draft Thursday.

League spokesman Michael Signora says in an email that all four players — New Mexico receiver Chase Clayton, North Carolina linebacker Darius Lipford, Virginia-Lynchburg defensive tackle Lakendrick Ross and SMU running back Traylon Shead — went undrafted and are now free agents.

The supplemental draft allows qualified underclassmen who did not request early entry into the regular draft to have a chance at entering the NFL. Teams submit picks and are awarded players if their bid — for which round they would take that player — is highest. Teams then lose the corresponding pick in next year’s draft.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals placed left-hander Jason Vargas on the disabled list after an appendectomy and recalled reliever Louis Coleman from Triple-A Omaha before Thursday night’s game against Detroit.

Vargas began experiencing pain early Wednesday in Tampa, and underwent the procedure later in the day. He remained in Florida after the Royals beat the Rays to wrap up their series.

Vargas is off to the best start of his nine-year big league career. He’s 8-4 with 3.31 ERA in 19 starts, solidifying a rotation that lost Ervin Santana to free agency last season.

Coleman was a dominant reliever for the Royals last season, but he had an unsightly 6.41 ERA with the club this season. He’s been in Omaha trying to rediscover his form.

Fremont Can’t Enforce Part of Its Immigration Rule

fremont-policeFREMONT, Neb. (AP) — Fremont is still struggling to enforce part of its ordinance requiring people to obtain licenses and swear they have legal permission to live in the U.S. before renting homes in the Nebraska city.

Fremont Police Chief Jeff Elliott says nearly 500 rental licenses have been issued to people who applied and paid the $5 fee since the city started the process on April 10.

Only applicants who say they aren’t U.S. citizens are investigated, but none of the 17 people who said they aren’t citizens have been scrutinized.

Fremont lacks an agreement with the federal government, so Elliott says none of the applicants have been investigated.

The attorney who is negotiating that agreement for the city didn’t immediately respond to a message Thursday.

Game and Parks Accepting Grant Applications for Outdoor Projects

Nebraska_game_and_parksLINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is accepting grant applications for parks, pools and other outdoor recreation facilities.

The grants are funded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), a program administered by the National Park Service for outdoor recreation projects. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to, baseball fields, soccer fields, swimming pools, picnicking facilities, playgrounds, park acquisition and development, shelter houses and related support facilities. The LWCF was established by Congress in 1964 to ensure access to outdoor recreation resources for present and future generations and to provide money to governments to purchase land, water and wetlands to benefit all. The primary source of revenue for the LWCF is from federal oil and gas leases on the Outer Continental Shelf.

Nebraska Cash Reserve Expected to Hit $707.5 Million

ne-department-of-revenueLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Higher than expected tax collections will boost Nebraska’s cash reserve to a projected $707.5 million.

The Nebraska Department of Revenue reported Thursday that net tax receipts totaled more than $4.1 billion for the budget year that ended on June 30.

The state’s economic forecasting advisory board predicted in February that Nebraska would receive about $4.02 billion, using conservative estimates.

By law, the difference of nearly $97 million has to go into the state’s cash reserve. That additional money will boost Nebraska’s rainy-day fund to $707.5 million.

The Government Finance Officers Association recommends that states maintain a savings balance that would cover two months’ worth of general fund expenses.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A former Lincoln firefighter has lost his emergency medical technician license after he was found guilty of possessing child pornography.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services revoked the license of 53-year-old Daniel R. King in May, citing his felony conviction.

King, who also was a former substitute school bus driver for Lincoln Public Schools, was sentenced in November to 90 days in jail and five years of probation. He was required to register as a sex offender for 25 years.

King was charged in January 2013 after police searched his home and found child pornography on a desktop computer and an external hard drive. Before his arrest, King had worked as a firefighter in Lincoln for 22 years and a substitute bus driver since 2009.

Lincoln District Wants Vans for Transport of Homeless Kids

lincoln-public-schoolsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln district officials are hoping to acquire more buses and vans so the district no longer has to use taxis to take homeless children to and from school.

Federal law requires that public schools pay transportation costs to get students to and from their home school when they become homeless.

The vans and buses would cost $244,000 to $304,000, which would be offset by savings on transportation costs. Officials would use savings from this year and next year’s budgets to buy the vehicles.

Associate superintendent Liz Standish estimates that the vehicles would pay for themselves over the next seven years.

The purchase proposal is under consideration by the school board.

Woman Won’t Be Charged in Nebraska Prison Shooting

gavel-moreYORK, Neb. (AP) — No charges will be filed against a former staffer who shot herself in the chin while in the lobby at the state prison in York.

Authorities say 49-year-old Robin Staehr, of York, walked into the prison lobby on May 24, demanding to be let inside. Then she shot herself with a .22-caliber rifle. She was soon captured and taken to a Lincoln hospital.

Staehr had resigned from her job at the women’s prison in 2005.

York County Attorney Candace Dick said that state statutes aren’t applicable in the case and that every effort was being made to ensure that Staehr didn’t pose a threat to anyone else.

Authorities said shortly after the incident that it was believed Staehr was intoxicated that day.
