Gregory Earns Spot on Nagurski Trophy Watch List

Randy Gregory
Randy Gregory

The preseason honors continue to roll in for Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory. The junior standout was named to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Thursday.

The 6-6, 240-pound Gregory is among the nation’s top returning defenders. Gregory led the Big Ten with 10.5 sacks last season, including nine in conference games. He also led the Huskers with 19 tackles for loss and was third on the team with 66 total tackles.

Gregory earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for his efforts in 2013, and is considered a strong candidate for first-team All-America honors this fall. In addition to being named to the Nagurski Watch List on Thursday, Gregory was earlier named to the watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and Lott Trophy.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is presented by the Football Writers Association of America and is given to the nation’s top defensive player. Five finalists for the award will be named on Nov. 20, and the winner will be announced at a banquet in Charlotte on Dec. 8. Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh won the award in 2009.

Gregory is one of 10 Big Ten defenders on the watch list, including fellow defensive ends Joey Bosa (Ohio State), Shilique Calhoun (Michigan State) and Frank Clark (Michigan).

Additional watch lists will be announced through Friday, July 18.

Ex-Minor Leaguers Sue MLB over Low Salaries

Minor League BaseballST. LOUIS (AP) — Like many young baseball players, Aaron Senne dreamed of fame and fortune when he signed his first contract as a Miami Marlins draft choice after a record-breaking college career at Missouri.

Reality as a low-level minor leaguer was far different: vending machine dinners, bug-infested apartments and a salary with an equivalent hourly wage less than what fast-food workers make

Senne and former minor-league players in each of the 30 big-league organizations are suing Major League Baseball, alleging violations of federal wage and overtime laws in a case some legal observers suggest has significant merit.

The lawsuit’s driving force is Garrett Broshuis, another former minor-leaguer from Mizzou who went to law school after six seasons in the San Francisco Giants’ organization. Major League Baseball says the claims lack merit.

Harley Davidson Recalling 66,421 Motorcycles

Harley-DavidsonDETROIT (AP) — Harley-Davidson is recalling 66,421 Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles from the 2014 model year because their front wheels can lock up without warning.

Motorcycles with anti-lock brakes built between July 1, 2013, and May 7, 2014, are included in the recall.

Harley-Davidson Inc. says the front brake line can get pinched between the fuel tank and the frame. That could cause front brake fluid pressure to increase, increasing the risk that the front wheel could lock up while riding.

The company knows of five crashes and two minor injuries related to the defect, which it discovered last fall through warranty claims.

Harley-Davidson will notify owners later this month. Dealers will replace the brake lines for free and attach straps to hold them in place.

Man Gets 17 Years in Nursing Home Beating Death

jailNEW YORK (AP) — A New York City man will spend 17 years in prison for beating his nursing home roommate to death with a metal piece from a wheelchair.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced the sentence Wednesday for 67-year-old Thomas Yarnavick.

Yarnavick pleaded guilty to manslaughter in May.

His roommate, 71-year-old Jailall Singh, was clubbed in the head with a wheelchair footrest on Oct. 30 in Rockaway Park.

Authorities say that after the beating, Yarnavick put the bloody footrest in a laundry hamper.

Lincoln Officer Alerts Residents to Apartment Fire

fire-graphicLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A police officer has been credited with alerting residents about a fire at a Lincoln apartment building.

Police say Sgt. Tom Ward spotted the nine-unit apartment building on fire early Wednesday. He radioed for help and banged on the doors of three garden-level units.

Ward was unable to reach the second and third floors so he threw rocks at windows to alert sleeping residents.

Responding firefighters used truck ladders to reach trapped residents. Officer Katie Flood says four people were injured in the fire.

Investigator Ken Hilger says a microwave inside one of the units started the fire. He estimated the fire caused $150,000 to $175,000 in damages.

Police: Substitute Teacher Had Sex with 2 Students

schoolNEW BRIGHTON, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania high school substitute English teacher has been charged with having sex with two 18-year-old students days before they graduated.

The attorney for 26-year-old Tiffany Leiseth, of Moon Township, didn’t immediately return a call for comment.

Eighteen-year-olds can legally consent to sex in Pennsylvania, but police say she committed a crime because the encounters with the male students occurred when Leiseth still had a teacher-student relationship with them.

New Brighton schools Superintendent Joseph Guarino contacted police after he learned of the incidents. Police determined the students had sex with Leiseth in late May, after she invited them home on separate days.

Leiseth no longer works for the district. She is charged with two felony counts of having sexual contact with a student and one count of providing alcohol to a minor.

Perez Hits 3-Run HR in 9th, Royals beat Rays 5-4

kc-royalsST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 on Wednesday night.

Kirby Yates (0-1), the fifth Tampa Bay reliever, entered with runners on first and third with one out and gave up Perez’s towering shot into the left-field corner.

It’s been a big week for Perez, chosen Sunday to start at catcher for the American League in next week’s All-Star game.

Aaron Crow (4-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win. Greg Holland got three outs for his 24th save.

The second-place Royals return home Thursday night to begin a four-game series against AL Central-leading Detroit, which has a 4 1/2-game lead.

Study: Psych Drug ER Trips Approach 90,000 per Year

pain-pillsCHICAGO (AP) — A new study says bad reactions to psychiatric drugs result in nearly 90,000 emergency room visits each year by U.S. adults.

A drug used in some popular sleeping pills is among the common culprits.

Most of the ER visits involve troublesome side effects or accidental overdoses and almost one in five results in hospitalization.

That’s according to an analysis of 2009-2011 data that the study authors analyzed.

They say doctors can help by recommending that patients use other insomnia treatments first, including better sleep habits and behavior therapy.
