Ford Recalling 100,566 Vehicles Due to Safety Issues

fordDETROIT (AP) — Ford is recalling 100,566 vehicles in North America for various safety defects.

The company announced the six separate recalls Tuesday. No injuries related to the defects have been reported.

The largest recall, of 92,022 vehicles, affects the 2013 and 2014 Taurus, Lincoln MKS, and Police Interceptor sedans, the Flex and Lincoln MKT crossovers, the 2012-2014 Edge and 2014 Lincoln MKX. Ford says the right-hand halfshaft, which is part of the axle, may disengage over time, making the vehicles inoperable.

Ford is recalling 5,264 2011-2014 F59 commercial stripped chassis because corrosion could lead to a fire risk. It’s also recalling 2,124 Escape SUVs from the 2014 model year because their panoramic glass roofs might leak or fall out.

Ford will notify owners and dealers will repair the vehicles for free.

Kansas Won’t Release Data from Reading, Math Tests

schoolTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas won’t be issuing any report cards this year on how well its public school students performed on standardized reading and math tests after cyberattacks and other problems this spring.

The State Board of Education decided Tuesday not to release any scores.

The board’s decision means there won’t be a report on how students scored overall statewide or how students in each school district or individual schools scored.

The University of Kansas center that designed the tests told the board last month that it should not release data for individual schools and districts because of cyberattacks and other problems from March 10 to April 10.

The state Department of Education typically releases data from testing each fall.

World’s Tallest Water Slide Set to Open Thursday in KC

tallest-water-slideKANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — After three delays, the world’s tallest water slide is scheduled to open this week.

Officials at Schlitterbahn water park in Kansas City, Kansas, said Tuesday that the public will be able to ride the Verrückt slide on Thursday.

The ride was originally scheduled to open on May 23 when the water park’s season began. The next scheduled opening on June 5 was postponed, and a June 29 date also was delayed. Park officials have said the delays were needed to allow for more testing.

Guinness World Records in April certified the 17-story, 168-foot-tall attraction as the tallest water slide in the world. Riders on the Verrückt, which means “insane” in German, plummet at 60 mph to 70 mph on four-person rafts.

Mark Pelini Named to Rimington Watch List

Mark Pelini Nebraska Huskers FootballNebraska senior Mark Pelini is one of 66 centers who have been named to the official watch list for the 2014 Rimington Trophy announced Tuesday morning.

The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the nation’s top center. The award is named in honor of Dave Rimington who twice won the Outland Trophy and captured the Lombardi Award during his All-America career at Nebraska.

Pelini has been a valuable member of the Husker offensive line each of the past two seasons. A year ago, he saw extensive time at center and his role increased in the second half of the year when injuries hit the offensive front.

The 6-0, 290-pound Pelini helped Nebraska feature one of the nation’s top running attacks in 2013. Behind the play of the offensive line, I-back Ameer Abdullah racked up 1,690 rushing yards, the most by a Nebraska player since 1997.

Pelini will also be counted on for leadership on the offensive line in 2014. The Huskers graduated five seniors from its 2013 offensive line, leaving Pelini as one of the most experienced members of the position group.

Pelini is one of 10 Big Ten centers on the watch list. The winner of the 2014 Rimington Trophy will be honored at a banquet in Lincoln on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015.

Man Dies at South Dakota Hot Dog Eating Contest

odd-newsCUSTER, S.D. (AP) — A Fourth of July hot dog eating contest in South Dakota turned tragic when a contestant choked to death.

Custer County Sheriff Rick Wheeler says 47-year-old Walter Eagle Tail, of Custer, died Thursday at a hospital after attempts to save him failed at the scene.

The Custer Chamber of Commerce sponsored the contest. The group canceled a pie-eating contest scheduled for Friday.

Chamber Executive Director Dave Ressler says the group is “at a loss for words.”

Speed-eating competitions are popular over the Fourth of July weekend. Eight-time champion Joey “Jaws” Chestnut managed to eat 61 hot dogs in 10 minutes at the annual Coney Island contest on Friday, eight short of the record 69 he swallowed in the 2013 competition.
