NCAA Suggests Contact Limits for Football Practice

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsThe NCAA is suggesting that football teams hold no more than two contact practices per week during the season in guidelines that grew out of a safety and concussion summit early this year.

Practice limits were among several recommendations released Monday by the NCAA, which called them guidelines that could change “in real time” rather than rules passed through legislation.

The practice guidelines also recommend four contact practices per week during the preseason and no more than eight of the 15 sessions during spring football.

The NCAA is also suggesting that schools have independent doctors to evaluate injuries and a “return to learn” process for integrating athletes back into their academic work after they have been diagnosed with a concussion.

The Safety in College Football Summit was in Atlanta in January.

NSP Nets 12 Impaired Drivers During July 4 Enforcement

state-patrol-logoTroopers with the Nebraska State Patrol arrested 12 motorists for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) over the July 4th holiday weekend.

In addition to the 12 DWI’s, 192 speeding citations were issued during the special enforcement effort which took place Thursday, July 3 through Saturday, July 5. An $18,960 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS), helped to pay for overtime hours worked by troopers and communication specialist during the enforcement time period.

The following statistics reflect statewide activity by the Nebraska State Patrol from July 3-5.

Hershey Man Accused of Raping Female Juvenile

A Hershey man is in jail after he allegedly raped a female juvenile.

At around 2:00 a.m., on July 6, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a female juvenile was in the the Emergency Room at Great Plains Health, reporting that she was the victim of a sexual assault.

Deputies met with the victim and transported her to a local facility for an interview and medical examination.

The victim told deputies that she bad been at a residence on Oregon Trail Road, just south of Hershey, visiting a friend, 19-year-old Casey Mitchell.

The female said, at some point during the evening, Mitchell informed her that he wanted to have sexual intercourse.

The victim told Mitchell many times that she did not want to have sex,  but it was to no avail according to deputies.

After the incident, the victim was able to leave the residence.  Deputies say she then spoke with a parent of a friend who transported her to the Emergency Room.

At around 8:00 a.m., the same day, deputies executed a search warrant on the residence where the assault allegedly took place, where they located Mitchell and numerous items of evidence.

Mitchell was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and jailed.

He’s been charged with 1st degree sexual assault.

Abdullah, Bell, Gregory Named to Watch Lists

UNLHusker seniors Ameer Abdullah and Kenny Bell and junior Randy Gregory were each named to watch lists announced on Monday morning.

One of the nation’s top returning rushers, Abdullah was named to watch lists for both the 78th annual Maxwell Award and the Paul Hornung Award. Bell was also named to the Hornung Award Watch List, while Gregory was listed on the watch list for the 20th annual Chuck Bednarik Award.

The Maxwell Award has been given to America’s College Player of the Year since 1937 and is presented by the Maxell Football Club. The club also presents the Bednarik Award, given annually to the College Defensive Player of the Year, since 1995. The Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse is given annually by the Louisville Sports Commission to the most versatile player in college football.

Abdullah rushed for 1,690 yards last season, the most by a Nebraska player since 1997, and this fall he could become the first Husker to record three 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He is also the nation’s active career leader in all-purpose yards and is on track to become Nebraska’s all-time leader in that category.

Like Abdullah, Bell is a dual threat for the Huskers, excelling as a receiver and kickoff return specialist. Bell enters his senior season poised to become the school’s all-time leader in both receptions and receiving yardage. He is also one of the nation’s top returning kickoff returners after averaging 26.5 yards per return last season, including a 99-yard touchdown.

Gregory became one of the Big Ten’s top defenders last season and has earned preseason All-America accolades in 2014. In his first year with the Huskers, Gregory led the Big Ten with 10.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss. Nine of Gregory’s sacks came in Big Ten Conference play, including a season-high three sacks at Michigan.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced Nov. 3, while the three finalists for each award will be unveiled on Nov. 24. The winners will be announced as part of the ESPN College Football Awards show on Dec. 11.

Monday’s announcements were first of several watch lists which will be unveiled over the next two weeks. The National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) has spearheaded a coordinated effort to promote each award’s preseason candidates. Nebraska Animal Storm Deaths Estimated at 1,000

pilger-tornado-2LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities estimate that about 1,000 large animals were killed by the June 16 storms that roared through northeast Nebraska, destroying more than half of Pilger.

Marty Marks of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service office in Wayne County says the toll could be 1,000 in a six-county region, plus hundreds of chickens and other poultry.

Producers aren’t required to report livestock losses to the government, and businesses such as cattle feeding operations generally don’t insure individual animals.

The EF4 tornado that struck Pilger killed a 5-year-old girl in town and a motorist a few miles east of town.

North Platte and Pleasanton Teens Selected to Attend NREA Youth Energy Camp

dawson-public-powerDawson Public Power District has selected four teens from North Platte and Pleasanton to represent the District at the Nebraska Rural Electric Association’s Youth Energy Camp.

Held July 14-18 at the Nebraska 4-H Camp in Halsey, the Youth Energy Camp provides opportunities for teens to explore and learn more about the electric utility industry. About 60 campers from Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota and Colorado attend annually.

Activities include tours of the Gerald Gentleman Power Station and Kingsley Hydroelectric Power Plant, workshops and presentations by regional experts and a high voltage trailer demonstration, along with recreational activities.

The teens selected are:

North Platte

  • Eleanor Aufdenkamp.  Parents are Brent and Brenda Aufdenkamp.
  • Megan Johnson.  Parents are Kevin and Michele Johnson.
  • Turner Nansel.  Parents are Kirk and Tyann Nansel.

Pleasanton

  • Clayton Darby.  Parents are Jim and Heidi Darby.

Dawson Public Power District is a Nebraska rural electric utility system that serves south central Nebraska along the Platte River Valley. Organized in 1937, Dawson PPD provides service to more than 23,000 electric meters and maintains over 5,800 miles of power lines. Tot Wanders from Family, Found Dead in NYC Lake

NYPDNEW YORK (AP) — A 2-year-old girl who wandered away from a holiday-weekend family barbecue in a New York City park has been found dead in a lake.

New York Police Department divers pulled Ruhshona Kurbonova’s body from the water in Prospect Park on Saturday night after a frantic five-hour search.

Police were called at around 1 p.m., after Ruhshona and a toddler boy in the family strayed from the gathering. The boy was found soaked but safe.

The girl’s uncle, Dekzod Isokov, tells the New York Post the children just “walked off, and we didn’t know.”

Witnesses say Ruhshona’s 37-year-old mother screamed and collapsed after hearing the news. Paramedics took her to a hospital for evaluation. She was later released.

The family emigrated from Uzbekistan.

Kemp’s 4 Hits Leads Dodgers past Rockies 8-2

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Matt Kemp had four hits and drove in two runs, Adrian Gonzalez had three RBIs and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 8-2 on Sunday.

Juan Uribe added three hits for the Dodgers, who won three of four in the weekend series. They head to Detroit in first place in the NL West, a half-game ahead of San Francisco.

Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, an All-Star starter with an NL-best 5.3 million votes, scored both runs for the Rockies.

Colorado was 26-20 on May 20 but has lost 17 of 20 to fall into a tie for last in the NL West with Arizona.

Josh Beckett (6-5) allowed just three hits in five scoreless innings.

Colorado left-hander Yohan Flande (0-2) allowed five runs in 4 1-3 innings.
