Kershaw Shuts Down Rockies in 9-0 Win

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Clayton Kershaw nearly had no-hit stuff against Colorado again, allowing only two singles over eight masterful innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Rockies 9-0 on Friday night.

Kershaw (10-2) extended his scoreless streak to 36 innings before being replaced by a pinch hitter in the ninth.

The hard-throwing lefty bottled up the top-hitting team in the majors in nearly matching the no-hitter he threw against the Rockies on June 18 at Dodger Stadium. Kershaw struck out eight and walked one.

Yasiel Puig hit a two-run homer and Scott Van Slyke added a three-run homer as the Dodgers had a season-high 19 hits.

Jair Jurrjens (0-1) struggled in his first big-league start in a year, lasting 4 2-3 innings and giving up eight runs.

Salvador Perez and Christian Colon, making his first major-league start, had three hits apiece while Lorenzo Cain snapped an 0 for 11 skid with an RBI single in the third and a run-scoring double in the fifth.

Josh Tomlin (5-6), coming off a one-hit, no-walk, 11-strikeout performance against Seattle, allowed five runs and 11 hits in 5 2-3 innings.

Omaha Officials say Sky Lanterns Imperil Airplanes

sky-lanternOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha airport officials say lit sky lanterns that float into the sky are pretty, but they also pose a danger to airplanes.

Tim Schmitt is operations manager at Omaha’s Eppley Airfield, and he says concerns about the colored lanterns rise on the Independence Day weekend. Schmitt said the lanterns can be ingested by aircraft engines or end up littering runways.

Schmitt says that on the Fourth of July last year, airport workers picked up more than 100 of the sky lanterns on the airfield.

Schmitt is asking people not to release the lanterns within five miles of the airport, which sits on the east side of Omaha, next to the Missouri River.

Greinke (11-4) got the win when the Dodgers rallied in the ninth. Matt Kemp worked a leadoff walk off LaTroy Hawkins (2-2), went to second on Scott Van Slyke’s groundout and scored when Uribe singled under the glove of second baseman DJ LeMahieu.

Blue Jays Challenge, Get Own Runner Called Out

mlb bigOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays used a replay challenge to have their own runner called out in order to score a run.

Toronto loaded the bases with one out in the second inning against the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night. Anthony Gose then hit a grounder to first baseman Nate Freiman. Freiman appeared to tag Munenori Kawasaki as he ran for second base, but umpire Vic Carapazza ruled Freiman missed the tag and Kawasaki was safe.

Freiman threw to catcher Stephen Vogt, who stepped on home plate for a forceout with Edwin Encarnacion, the runner on third, approaching.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons argued that Kawasaki was out and that Encarnacion should be allowed to score because there would have been no force play at the plate.

After a delay of 4 minutes, 27 seconds, the call was overturned and the Blue Jays were given a run.

Oakland manager Bob Melvin immediately came out to argue. The A’s were playing the remainder of the game under protest.
