Twins Lose Mauer to Injury but Beat Royals 10-2

kc-royalsMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Mauer drove in two runs before leaving with an injury, Eduardo Nunez homered and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 10-2 Tuesday night.

Mauer extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-run double down the left-field line in the fourth inning, but was noticeably limping as he ran to second base. The team said he has a strained muscle on his right side and will be evaluated Wednesday.

Ricky Nolasco (5-6) earned his first win in five starts, allowing one run and eight hits in six innings.

Eric Hosmer had four hits for the Royals.

Strasburg, Nationals Flatten Rockies 7-1

colorado-rockiesWASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg bounced back from his worst outing of the season with 7 2-3 dominant innings, and Jayson Werth had two doubles and three RBIs in the Washington Nationals’ 7-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.

Anthony Rendon added a two-run double for Washington, which has won four straight.

Strasburg (7-6) tied his career high by allowing seven earned runs in 4 2-3 innings in his last start, and was 0-2 with a 7.27 ERA over his last three.

Tuesday night he struck out eight and walked one while giving up one run. The Rockies didn’t get a runner past second until DJ LeMahieu’s homer in the eighth.

He was lifted after walking Corey Dickerson with his 111th pitch of the night.

Christian Friedrich (0-3) allowed five runs in 3 1-3 innings for Colorado, which has lost 13 of 15.

US World Cup Ends with 2-1 OT Loss to Belgium

US Soccer LogoSALVADOR, Brazil (AP) — They captured the eyes and hearts of a suddenly awakened soccer nation, who gathered in unprecedented numbers to watch the world’s game.

But the end of the ride came at the exact same point as four years ago: with an overtime loss in the World Cup’s round of 16.

Kevin De Bruyne finally beat goalkeeper Tim Howard in the third minute of extra time, Romelu Lukaku scored 12 minutes later to give Belgium a two-goal lead, and the Red Devils hung on for a 2-1 victory Tuesday night.

Before exiting, the U.S. showed the spunk that captured America’s attention. Julian Green, at 19 the youngest player on the U.S. roster, stuck out his right foot to volley in Michael Bradley’s pass over the defense in the 107th minute, two minutes after entering the game.

They nearly tied it up in the 114th, when Clint Dempsey peeled off the ball and was stopped point-blank by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after being fed by Bradley on a free kick.

But it wasn’t enough, and U.S. players fell to the field at the final whistle in their all-white uniforms like so many crumpled tissues.

DENVER (AP) — A person with knowledge of the situation says the Colorado Avalanche have signed forward Jarome Iginla to a three-year, $16 million deal.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the deal has yet to be announced.

Iginla scored 30 goals and had 31 assists in 78 games with the Boston Bruins last season. He will be counted on to help fill the scoring void left by Paul Stastny, who signed a four-year, $28 million deal with St. Louis earlier in the day.

Iginla, who turned 37 on Tuesday, is a six-time All Star. He’s led the league in goals twice and has 560 in his career with Calgary, Pittsburgh and Boston.

TSN first reported Iginla’s signing with Colorado.

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche acquired defenseman Brad Stuart from the San Jose Sharks for a second-round pick in 2016 and a sixth-rounder in 2017.

The 34-year-old Stuart will help bolster the Avalanche’s blue line after a season in which he skated in 61 games for the Sharks. He was third on the team in blocked shots (114) and hits (122).

Stuart was the third overall pick by San Jose in 1998. He’s also suited up for Boston, Calgary, Los Angeles and Detroit.

Colorado has been active the last two days, acquiring veteran forward Daniel Briere from Montreal on Monday for right wing P.A. Parenteau and a fifth-round pick next year.

Earlier Tuesday, the Avalanche lost Paul Stastny through free agency as the center signed a four-year deal with St. Louis.

police-lights-redCEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Cedar Rapids police say the body of a teenager swept into a storm drain has been found more than a mile away in a lake.

Firefighters who were searching in a boat found the body about 4 p.m.

The body is being taken to a local hospital and the state medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Blake was with friends on the grounds of an elementary school when he was pulled into the drain by fast-moving water.

Graco Gives In, Agrees to Recall Infant Seats

graco-car-seatDETROIT (AP) — Graco Children’s Products is recalling 1.9 million infant car seats, agreeing to government demands in what is now the largest seat recall in American history.

The recall came after a five-month spat between Graco and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Earlier this year the company recalled 4.2 million toddler seats for a harness buckle problem. But it resisted the agency’s demand to recall the infant seats.

Buckles can get gummed up by food and drinks, making it difficult to remove children. In some cases parents had to cut harnesses to get their kids out. The agency says that increases the risk of injuries in emergencies.

Graco argued that infant seats are used differently, and in an emergency, an adult can remove the whole seat rather than using the buckle.
