Omaha School Officials Review $683,000 in Projects

omaha-psOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha school board members have reviewed a pared-down list that still contains $683 million in capital projects being proposed for bond funding.

The board took no action on Monday night as members listened to consultants discuss the projects. The board has until Aug. 29 to place a bond issue on the November ballot.

Consultants from Jacobs Program Management Co. say the original list of repairs, renovations and new schools totaled a $1.1 billion. School officials have said the large price tag is driven by enrollment increases and building deficiencies that have become apparent since the $254 million bond issue 15 years ago.

Board members say they’re pursuing other funding sources to ease the tax hike that would be needed for the bonds
