Columbus Still Trying to Save Old Train Depot

Union-PacificCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — The city is still looking for private parties willing to spend $750,000 or more to move and save Columbus’ old Union Pacific depot.

City officials discussed at Monday night’s council meeting the railroad’s plan to tear down the depot after its employees move into a new building.

City administrator Joe Mangiamelli says the city has leased land the depot could be moved to, if someone or a group were to come forward with the money.

Mayor Mike Moser says he wouldn’t favor spending city funds on the project, a stance echoed by Councilman Rich Jablonski, who said, “We can’t save everything.”

The building dates back to 1887.
