Huskers Dominate in 4-0 Triumph Over UND

huskersoccerLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska soccer team (4-2) scored three goals in the second half to cruise to a 4-0 victory over North Dakota on Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field.

Sophomore forward Jaycie Johnson scored twice in the first three minutes of the second period to increase her season total to six goals. In the 47th minute, Johnson notched her first goal of the day off an assist from Caroline Flynn.

Johnson broke away one minute later and scored from 15 feet out to put NU up 3-0. For the game, Johnson took seven shots, five of which were on goal, in 61 minutes of action.

Senior forward Mayme Conroy added six shots and scored the first goal of the game for Nebraska in the ninth minute. Conroy gathered the ball at midfield and broke away from the UND defense before beating the goalkeeper. The goal marked her second of the season.

In the 76th minute, sophomore Courtney Claassen rebounded Flynn’s shot off the crossbar and scored the first goal of her career as the ball deflected off the defender’s leg into the back of the net.

Goalkeeper Kelly Schatz played the first 48 minutes of the match before freshman Erika Johnson finished the shutout over the final 42 minutes. Johnson earned one save in her first action as a Husker.

Nebraska controlled on offense for the majority of the game, taking 32 shots (15 in the first half and 17 in the second half) compared to North Dakota’s two shots. Fourteen of the Huskers’ shots were on goal.

The Huskers make their season debut on the Big Ten Network on Thursday as they take on Northwestern at the Nebraska Soccer Field at 2:30 p.m. Nebraska completes the two-game home stand on Sunday, Sept. 14 against Illinois at 1 p.m., on the Big Ten Digital Network.
