Lancaster County Pays $75,000 to Settle Lawsuit in Teen’s Death

lawsuit-settlementLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lancaster County has agreed to pay $75,000 to the father of a teen who sued after the boy committed suicide in a Lincoln detention center.

Sixteen-year-old Jonathan Kennedy was found unresponsive in his cell in 2012 and later died. A judge had ordered the boy detained for suspected drug use and self-harming behavior.

In the lawsuit, the teen’s father, Mark Kennedy, said his son was mentally ill and that detention center staff knew the teen had a history of suicide attempts, but failed to protect him.

A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit Monday, after the parties had settled. Lancaster County Attorney Joe Kelly says the settlement money will come from the county’s general fund.
