Nebraska Lawmakers Say Ridesharing Firms Welcome

ne-legislature-13LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lawmakers say ridesharing services are welcome in Nebraska if they follow the state’s rules and consult with regulators.

Members of the Legislature’s Transportation and Telecommunications Committee on Thursday repeatedly asked representatives of Lyft and Uber why they started Nebraska operations without Nebraska’s permission.

Nebraska Public Service Commission investigators have begun ticketing ridesharing drivers for operating without a commission permit. Lyft and Uber representatives have said the services don’t fit the definition of a common carrier and thus don’t fall under commission jurisdiction.

But Lyft attorney David Levy told the committee that Lyft has proposed a temporary operating agreement with the state that would let it temporarily offer service in Nebraska until a long-term legislative or regulatory solution is found.
