Lincoln Public Schools to Remove Gender Handouts

lincoln-public-schoolsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Lincoln Public Schools superintendent says gender identity handouts given to teachers will be removed from district campuses.

Steve Joel made the announcement at the Lincoln Board of Education meeting Tuesday night. He said the handouts weren’t appropriate, purposeful or clear.

District officials spoke with school leaders before the academic year began to help them better understand issues transgender students face. The handouts suggested words to replace gendered terms like “girls” and “boys.” School officials have stressed that they were suggestions and not mandates.

Some parents have decried the handouts at the last two meetings. They say the district promoted one view of gender over another and hasn’t been transparent.
