FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — Two young Fremont brothers are being hailed as heroes for saving their grandfather’s life when he collapsed last month while babysitting them.
7-year-old James Fittje and his younger brother, 6-year-old Andrew Fittje, were alone at their home with Joe Belchal, otherwise known as “Grampy,” on Nov. 18 when their grandfather collapsed.
After unsuccessfully trying to get Belchal to respond, James called 911, giving the emergency dispatcher his name and address. James and his brother then went outside to flag down responding workers.
Police and emergency medical technicians were impressed by how calm and quickly the boys reacted in an emergency.
On Tuesday, the boys were honored with certificates of heroism issued by the Fremont City Council.
