Omaha Boarding House Fire Victim Identified

fatal-fireOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a 37-year-old woman who died after being pulled from the basement of a burning boarding house in southeast Omaha.

The Omaha Police Department identified her as Demetria Sanchez. The Omaha Fire Department says the woman died Tuesday at Nebraska Medical Center. A man who also was found in the boarding house’s basement was taken to Creighton University Medical Center for treatment. He was identified as 27-year-old Eddie Valentine.

Firefighters were called to the house near 22nd and M streets around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Omaha Fire Battalion Chief Tim McCaw says the fire started in the basement, but it’s not clear how it started.
