Miscalculated Sentences Leads AP List of Nebraska’s Top 10 Stories of 2014

prisonOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Newspaper and broadcast members of The Associated Press have voted the errant early release of hundreds of state prison inmates as Nebraska’s top news story for 2014.

The discovery by the Omaha World-Herald led to a roundup of former inmates, the early retirement of two prison attorneys and calls for additional reforms.

Finishing second in the voting was news about the killer tornado that tore through Pilger. The firing of Nebraska head football coach Bo Pelini finished third.

In order, the rest of the stories were about the treatment of Ebola patients in Omaha, the Nebraska elections, a ballot measure on Nebraska’s minimum wage, a ruling on the Keystone XL pipeline, severe weather in the rest of Nebraska, the resignation of Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann and news about prison overcrowding.
