Authorities Investigating After 4 Found Dead in Texas Home

police-lights-redCROWLEY, Texas (AP) — Authorities are investigating after police officers responding to a reported suicide attempt found four people dead inside a Texas home.

Crowley Police Chief Luis Soler said in a Sunday night news conference that a 9-year-old who was inside the home called a relative, who then called police. The woman told police around 4:15 p.m. that the child said a man there was injured after attempting suicide.

Soler says police arrived minutes later and found two women, a man and a female child dead.

Officers also found the 9-year-old caller at the scene, apparently uninjured. He is in protective custody and is being interviewed.

Soler could not immediately provide the causes of death and said the four had not been identified.

Crowley is about 15 miles south of Fort Worth.

Storm Grab One Point In 3-2 Shootout Loss

tcstormOMAHA, Neb. – Cody Milan scored a tying goal late in the third period to send the game to overtime, but the Tri-City Storm (14-7-5) fell to the Omaha Lancers (13-8-4) by a score of 3-2 in a shootout at the Ralston Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Bobby Nardella had the first Storm goal of the evening, before assisting on Milan’s tally in the third. Tri-City netminder Alec Dillon made 27 saves.

The Storm are still one point behind Sioux City for the top spot in the USHL’s Western Conference, while the Lancers have won six consecutive games and are sitting in third place, three points behind Tri-City.

Neither team was able to score in the first period, but Omaha took a 1-0 lead in the second on defenseman Matt Joyaux’s first goal of the season.

Later in the middle period, Storm forward Chase Berger hit Nardella with a pass that set the defenseman free on a breakaway. The blueliner converted to score his fourth goal of the season, tying the game 1-1 at 17:37 of the frame.

In the third, the Lancers retook the lead on a goal by forward Louie Rowe. With the tally, Rowe extended his point scoring streak to 11 games and made it a 2-1 contest.

Milan got the Storm even once again with his sixth goal of the year at 13:03 of the final period. The tally was set up by forward Matthew Freytag, who passed the puck from behind the Omaha net right on Milan’s blade. Nardella picked up the second assist on the tying goal.

The two teams then went to overtime for the third time in four meetings this season, but neither squad could find the winner and they headed to a shootout.

Tri-City picked Chris Wilkie, Milan and Dan Labosky to represent the team in the skills competition, but all three forwards came up empty. Omaha forward Steven Spinner netted the winner in the third round to seal the victory for the Lancers.

Both teams ended with 29 shots on goal in the game. Tri-City has recorded points in all seven games in the month of December.

The Storm will close out the 2014 calendar with a New Year’s Eve battle in Sioux City on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.

Tri-City returns home to face the Lancers in Kearney at the Viaero Event Center this Saturday, also at 7:05.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Garrett Gamez and Kyle Eastman along with defenseman Tory Dello…

Broncos Rout Raiders 47-14, Clinch First-Round Bye

DenverBroncosDENVER (AP) — C.J. Anderson ran for three touchdowns, and the Denver Broncos earned a first-round bye and the AFC’s No. 2 seed with a 47-14 rout of the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.

Peyton Manning guided the Broncos (12-4) to at least a tie for the best record in the NFL for the third consecutive season since his arrival in Denver. That’s something he accomplished just twice in his 13 years in Indianapolis before missing all of 2011 because of spinal fusion surgery.

Denver won’t have the top seed this time, however. That went to the New England Patriots, who rested many of their starters in a loss to Buffalo on Sunday.

And Manning, who completed 21 of 37 passes for 273 yards, failed to throw a TD pass for the second time in four weeks after throwing one for 51 consecutive games, just three shy of Drew Brees’ NFL record.

Chiefs Beat Chargers 19-7 as Both Miss Playoffs

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs beat San Diego 19-7 on Sunday to eliminate the Chargers from playoff contention, moments before they were eliminated themselves by games happening elsewhere.

The Chiefs needed Cleveland to beat Baltimore and Jacksonville to beat Houston, and neither of those outcomes transpired. The Ravens wound up with the AFC’s final playoff spot.

San Diego (9-7) needed merely to beat Kansas City (9-7) to reach the postseason.

Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston piled up four sacks to finish with 22 on the season, breaking Derrick Thomas’s franchise record, and Cairo Santos had four field goals.

The Chargers’ Philip Rivers threw for 291 yards, but was picked off twice. Branden Oliver ran for 71 yards and a touchdown.

Man Faces Robbery Charge in Omaha Carjacking

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man faces a robbery charge in connection to a carjacking in Omaha.

Police say the 21-year-old man was taken into custody following a carjacking Saturday night in east Omaha. A woman told authorities she was driving when she pulled over for a man waving at her. The woman said she thought she knew the man.

Authorities say the man got into the vehicle and told the woman he was taking the car. The woman got out of the car and reported the incident to police.

Officers say the woman’s car was later spotted with the 21-year-old man inside. He was taken into custody for questioning then later booked on a robbery charge. Court records do not list formal charges.

Dispatchers in Colfax County to Receive Texts

colfax county sheriffSCHUYLER, Neb. (AP) — Dispatchers in Colfax County in eastern Nebraska will soon be able to receive text messages for 911 emergencies.

The Colfax County Board of Commissioners recently approved a measure to spend more than $100,000 on a new text-to-911 system. It will give emergency dispatchers at the county courthouse in Schuyler the ability to receive text messages from cellphones and other devices.

Colfax County Sheriff Paul Kruse says there are benefits to the service, such as offering domestic violence victims a second option to contact dispatchers. It will also help people with hearing and speech impairments.

Several other Nebraska counties have plans to offer the service. Kruse says the system in Colfax County should be installed within the next 90 days.

Western Nebraska Law Enforcement Cheers Colorado Pot Lawsuit

Colorado-MarijuanaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Some western Nebraska law enforcement officials are cheering a new state lawsuit that seeks to thwart Colorado’s legalization of marijuana, even as Colorado vows to fight it in court.

The petition filed by Nebraska and Oklahoma asks the U.S. Supreme Court to invalidate Colorado’s Amendment 64, the legalization measure approved by voters in 2012.

Sidney police chief B.J. Wilkinson says he hopes the lawsuit draws attention to the frustrations of sheriff and police departments in Colorado’s border states, where marijuana remains illegal. Wilkinson says the amounts of marijuana found on people in Sidney are generally small, but the number of users has increased the workload for his department.

Law enforcement officials in Cheyenne, Deuel, Keith and Scotts Bluff counties have all said legalization in Colorado has affected their work.
