Omaha Man Dies After Car Hits Pole

fatal-accidentOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say an Omaha man has died at a hospital after his car crashed into a wooden utility pole.

Omaha police investigators say witnesses report seeing a vehicle driven by Carl Goodburn, who’s in his late 50s, weaving in and out of traffic before his car crashed into a utility pole on Tuesday. They say it’s unclear whether a medical emergency caused the crash.

A person performed CPR on Goodburn to try and revive him before paramedics arrived. He was taken to a hospital, where officials say he died several hours after the wreck occurred.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of Goodburn’s death.

After Being Hit by Car, Tampa Cat Crawls Back from Grave

odd-newsTAMPA, Fla. (AP) — If cats have nine lives, Bart the black and white feline from Tampa, Florida, has certainly used up one.

When 1 ½-year-old Bart was hit by a car earlier this month, owner Ellis Hutson was so distraught he couldn’t stand the thought of burying the cat. So he asked neighbor Dusty Albritton to dig a shallow grave.

But five days later, on Jan. 21, a matted and injured Bart emerged, meowing for food.

Hutson got in touch with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, which through the Save-A-Pet Medical Fund will help cover costs of surgery to remove an eye, wire his jaw shut and insert a feeding tube.

Bart should recover in about six weeks and he’ll go home with Hutson.

13 Storm Skaters Score Points In 6-1 Win

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – 13 different skaters registered a point for the Tri-City Storm (21-10-5) and the team put a total of 50 shots on net in a 6-1 rout of the Lincoln Stars (12-18-5) at the Viaero Event Center on Tuesday night.

Matthew Freytag led the way with two goals in the first period that were both assisted by captain Garrett Gamez, while Jake Wahlin, Mattias Goransson, Mason Appleton and Conner Valesano added tallies to put the game out of reach.

The six goals matched the highest offensive output for Tri-City this season. With the win, the club has also extended their longest winning streak of the year, which is now at seven games.

The Stars got ahead 1-0 in the first period when forward Ludvig Hoff poked a rebound past Storm netminder Alec Dillon.

But Dillon shut the door after the initial goal, finishing the night with 20 saves to earn the victory.

After falling behind early, Tri-City rattled off six straight goals and took control of the game. Freytag tied things up less than two minutes after Hoff’s goal, changing the momentum for good. Defenseman Cam Spicer put a shot on net from the point, but Lincoln goalie Cam Hackett couldn’t control the rebound, and Gamez found Freytag waiting in front for the loose puck.

On the duo’s next shift, Gamez found Freytag again, this time on a 2-on-1 moving into the Lincoln end. The Chino Hills, Calif. native centered the puck to Freytag, putting the puck in the perfect spot for the Wisconsin commit to beat Hackett.

Freytag now has 10 goals on the season, and joins Chris Wilkie and Nick Master as the third Storm forward with a double-digit goal total this season.

Tri-City opened up a two goal lead late in the first when Wahlin found the back of the net for the seventh time this season.

Goransson had the only tally of the second frame to make it 4-1, sneaking into the offensive end and taking a pass from Dan Labosky for his sixth tally of the year. Chase Berger picked up the second assist on the play.

In the third, Tri-City outshot Lincoln 20-9, continuing to control the game. Appleton got his ninth goal of the year at 7:05 of the final period from Joel Herbert and Cody Milan.

The final score of the game came from Valesano, who finished off a play with a wrist shot for his second goal of the year. Helpers on the final goal were given to Valesano’s linemates Wade Allison and Wahlin.

Tri-City remains in second place in the USHL’s Western Conference with 47 total points.

The Storm finish off a four-game homestand Saturday night when they host the Sioux Falls Stampede for Casino Night at the Viaero Event Center. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Nolan Aibel and Kyle Eastman along with defenseman Jason Krych…

Royals, Dyson Agree at $1,225,000 and Avoid Arbitration

Jarrod Dyson Kansas City RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals and outfielder Jarrod Dyson have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract for $1,225,000.

Dyson, who is expected to be the Royals’ fourth outfielder, can also make $25,000 for reaching 350 plate appearances and $50,000 if he’s chosen for the All-Star game.

Dyson earned $530,000 last season, $30,000 over the major league minimum. He had asked for $1.6 million this season and the Royals had countered at $900,000.

The former 50th-round amateur draft pick hit .269 with one homer and 24 RBIs in 290 plate appearances last season. But his real value came on the base paths, where he had a career-high 36 steals.

The deal Tuesday leaves outfielder Lorenzo Cain, first baseman Eric Hosmer, third baseman Mike Moustakas and pitchers Greg Holland, Kelvin Herrera and Danny Duffy as Kansas City’s remaining players in arbitration.

TSA Finding More Guns in Airport Carry-On Bags

TSABIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The government says it is finding more guns in carry-on bags at U.S. airports.

The Transportation Security Administration says officers discovered 2,212 weapons during safety screenings last year. That is 22 percent more than 2013.

The numbers are relatively small considering about 2 million people go through screenings daily. But TSA spokesman Mark Howell says the increase of 22 percent is still startling. Firearms were found at a total of 224 U.S. airports, or 19 more than the year before.

Howell says more people seem to be bringing weapons into airports in carry-on bags, most often by accident. He says the increase could be linked to more people with weapons permits and varying state laws on firearms.

Firearms can be sent through security in checked bags if they’re unloaded and stored properly.

Authorities Arrest Omaha Man Accused of Stealing Cattle

cass county sheriffOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Officials in western Iowa have arrested an Omaha man accused of stealing cattle and plan to arrest two others thought to be involved.

Cass County Sheriff Darby McLaren says the trio is suspected in cattle thefts from two farms in the Lewis, Iowa, area.

The investigation began when two cattle were reported stolen in May from Freund Brothers Farms. The farm reported the theft of two more in June. Another four cattle were reported stolen in June from JW Freund Farms.

Police say 57-year-old Ervin John Jacob was charged Thursday with three counts of second-degree theft and one count of ongoing criminal conduct. They say he is suspected in all three incidents.

Online court records do not list an attorney for Jacob.
