Measles Outbreak That Began at Disneyland Grows to 87 Cases

disneylandLOS ANGELES (AP) — A measles outbreak that originated at Disneyland has grown to 87 cases.

The California Department of Public Health said Monday most of the infections — 73— are in California. The rest are in Arizona, Utah, Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Nebraska and Mexico.

Measles has been spreading since an outbreak linked to visits to California Disney parks last month. Most of those infected were not vaccinated, and health officials have urged people to get the measles shot.

Measles is a contagious illness spread through the air by coughing and sneezing. It was largely eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, but it can enter the country from abroad.

The U.S. experienced a record number of measles cases last year, with 644 infections reported from 27 states.

Nebraska Bill to Allow 24/7 Liquor Sales Draws Opposition

liquor-salesLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill to eliminate bar closing times in Nebraska is drawing stiff opposition from cities as well as advocates who fight against drunken driving and binge drinking.

No one testified in favor of the bill Monday during a hearing of the Legislature’s General Affairs Committee. Opponents included the city of Lincoln, the League of Nebraska Municipalities and Project Extra Mile, which works to stop underage drinking.

Sen. Tyson Larson of O’Neill says he introduced the bill so businesses could decide for themselves.

Nebraska imposes a 1 a.m. closing time for bars, but gives local governments the option to extend theirs to 2 a.m. with a supermajority vote of a city council, village board or county board. Omaha and Lincoln have allowed bars to close at 2 a.m. since 2010.

Coach Patrick Roy says the team received the update on Johnson after he had a scope Monday. Roy said Johnson was “disappointed by the situation.” Roy also said he has a “lot of confidence in our group” and that it will mean “different responsibilities for some of our defensemen.”

DENVER (AP) — Reliever Adam Ottavino and the Colorado Rockies have agreed to a $1.3 million, one-year contract that avoided arbitration.

The 6-foot-5, hard-throwing righty was 1-4 with a 3.60 ERA in a career-high 75 appearances with the Rockies last season, when he made $502,000.

Colorado claimed Ottavino off waivers from St. Louis in 2012. He was a first-round pick by St. Louis in the 2006 amateur draft and has a 7-10 career record with a 4.05 ERA in 184 games.

Ottavino had asked $1,475,000 in arbitration and had been offered $1 million.

Colorado announced the deal Monday. Catcher Wiln Rosario is the Rockies’ last player in arbitration.

Manfred Faces Long List of Issues as New Baseball Commish

NEW YORK (AP) — Rob Manfred’s desk on the 31st floor of baseball’s Park Avenue offices was tidy on Monday, the first business day after he succeeded Bud Selig and started a five-year term as commissioner.

Having worked for MLB since 1998 as an executive vice president and then as chief operating officer, he didn’t have to move into a new office.

The issues are piled up: Oakland and Tampa Bay want new ballparks; negotiations are ongoing with players over pace of play and domestic violence; Baltimore and Washington are fighting in court over broadcast revenue; there is widespread agreement initiatives must be undertaken to develop young fans and players.

A pitch clock must be considered and decreased offense scrutinized along with increased offensive shifts.

Tighter balls? Shorter fences? A lower mound? Banning defensive shifts?

Perhaps they can be talked about in the future.
