New Walmart Supercenter Opening in Ogallala

walmartA new Walmart Supercenter is opening Wednesday, Jan. 28, following a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m.

The new store is located at 201 Pony Express Lane and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The store will provide Ogallala residents with a broad assortment of groceries and merchandise, along with a fuel station and full service pharmacy.

Residents can shop for more than a million additional items online on Walmart.com and pick them up at the new Ogallala Walmart store for free, often as quickly as the same day.

“I’m pleased that Walmart will be in Ogallala, as the store has created approximately 200 jobs and provides a retail option previously not available to us that will help generate greater sales tax revenue for the city,” said Ogallala City Manager Aaron Smith. “Also, last year Walmart gave over $11 million in Nebraska, and we look forward to working with this new store on projects in this community.”

The new store employs approximately 200 full- and part-time associates. Store manager, Christel Armstrong, began her Walmart career in 2002 as an hourly asset protection associate.

“With this new store, we are excited to bring the first Walmart gas station to Nebraska,” said store manager Christel Armstrong. “Whether in the cold of winter or the busy summer when tourists flock to Lake McConaughy, Walmart will provide customers with a convenient and affordable shopping option.”

“This store will have a full-grocery offering, a strong selection of general merchandise, and, through free Site-to-Store delivery from Walmart.com, there will be convenient access to millions of products at Walmart’s everyday low prices,” said Tom Wait, vice president, Walmart real estate strategy and analytics. “I was born and raised in Ogallala, and my folks still live there, so I know how high the cost of living can be for basic grocery items and general merchandise. That’s why I am very excited to be bringing Walmart’s low prices to town. This store will be an amazing addition to the community.”

The store will be giving away prizes during their “A Big Family Welcome” celebration on Saturday, January 31, from Noon-3:00 p.m.  Customers will get a chance to meet Armstrong, and enjoy fun family activities and free food samples while supplies last.

Keno Bill Again Sparks Debate in Nebraska Legislature

kenoLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska bill that would eliminate the mandatory waiting time between keno games is again facing opposition in the Legislature.

A lobbying group for Nebraska cities argued in favor of the measure during a legislative hearing Monday, while anti-gambling advocates voiced opposition.

The bill by Sen. Tyson Larson of O’Neill would remove the minimum five-minute waiting period between games. A similar measure that reduced the waiting period won first-round approval in the Legislature in 2013, but wasn’t passed before the session ended.

The bill would generate an estimated $1.3 million for Nebraska’s general fund and other cash funds over two years. The city of Omaha and the League of Nebraska Municipalities support it, saying keno revenue helps pay for community projects. Opponents say it would feed gambling addictions.

Woman, 24, Held in Death of Baby Found at Recycling Center

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) — Police say they’ve arrested a 24-year-old woman in the death of her newborn baby boy whose body was found in a suburban Detroit recycling center.

Roseville police Chief James P. Berlin announced the arrest Monday. He tells reporters that the woman had been pregnant and acquaintances were suspicious about her explanation for the absence of a baby.

Macomb County morgue employees have named the child Henry Alexander Macomb, after Macomb County’s namesake, Gen. Alexander Macomb. Business and community members are contributing a casket, headstone and cemetery plot.

Burial is planned at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township.

Berlin told MLive.com earlier Monday that detectives were headed to St. Clair County to talk to “specific people.”

Investigators say the baby found Jan. 14 in Roseville was 1 to 3 days old.

Omaha Leaders Urge Shooting Witnesses to Come Forward

crimeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha community leaders are urging anyone with information about Saturday’s shooting that left three dead and five injured to come forward.

Two city council members joined with northeast Omaha pastors and neighborhood leaders to hold a news conference Monday.

Council member Ben Gray urged people not to give into fear of gangs. He says someone knows who is responsible for the shooting and should contact police.

As many as 50 people were at a party when the shooting happened early Saturday morning.

Police have said witnesses at the scene were reluctant to cooperate with investigators.

Witnesses can submit tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers, and they may qualify for a $25,000 reward.

Police: Boy Fatally Shot Playing Cops and Robbers

ambulance-lightsEAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Police in Minnesota say a 15-year-old boy unintentionally fatally shot his 13-year-old brother while playing “cops and robbers.”

Police and paramedics responded to an Eagan home Sunday morning after the 15-year-old reported his brother was unresponsive and bleeding.

The 15-year-old told dispatchers his brother had fallen and stabbed himself while running with a knife. But when police arrived, the older boy told officers he had accidentally shot his brother.

The boys were home alone with their 11-year-old sister when they found an unloaded 9 mm pistol belonging to their father. Investigators say at some point, the firearm was loaded, then thought to be unloaded while the boys chased each other.

Police say the 15-year-old fired one round that struck his brother in the chest.

No one was arrested.

Nebraskans Call on Senators to Preserve Cigar Bar Status Quo

cigarLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Cigar aficionados are calling on Nebraska lawmakers to exclude cigar bars from the state’s smoking ban.

Advocates argued in a legislative hearing Monday that a recent court ruling robbed cigar shops of the exception they deserve.

The statewide ban has excluded cigar bars, hotel guest rooms and tobacco-only retailers since 2009. In August, the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled that the allowances for cigar bars and tobacco-only retailers amounted to unconstitutional special legislation.

Supporters call cigar smoking a hobby, not an addiction, and tout cigar bars as community gathering places.

Sen. Tyson Larson of O’Neill, who introduced the bill, says patrons and employees in cigar bars choose the smoky settings and asked the committee to return to the status quo.

A representative for the American Cancer Society testified in opposition.

The Huskers (12-7, 4-3 Big Ten) broke out of an offensive slump on Saturday against Michigan State, scoring 79 points against a Spartan defense that was surrendering 61.9 points per game. Nebraska, which averaged a league-low 58.2 points per game in its first six Big Ten games, hit 49 percent from the field and went 27-of-39 from the foul line to earn its fourth win in the last five games.

While All-Big Ten performers Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields combined for 53 points, it was the performances of a pair of role players that helped propel the Huskers above the .500 mark in Big Ten play for the first time in 2014-15. Leslee Smith stepped into the starting lineup after David Rivers suffered a knee injury in practice Thursday night and gave the Huskers seven points and seven rebounds in a career-high 30 minutes. Sophomore Tai Webster came off the bench and played extended minutes after starting center Walter Pitchford was ejected four minutes into the contest and gave the Huskers 13 points, three rebounds and a pair of steals in 28 minutes after playing just 21 minutes in NU’s previous four contests.

Michigan (12-8, 5-3 Big Ten) is coming off a tough 69-64 overtime loss to Wisconsin on Sunday. Derrick Walton Jr. led the Wolverines with 17 points, including a 3-pointer to send the game to overtime, while Zak Irvin added 12 in a losing cause. Michigan was dealt a blow earlier in the month with the season-ending injury to Caris LeVert, as the junior led the Wolverines in scoring (14.9 ppg), rebounding (4.9 rpg) and assists (3.7 apg).
