SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Two Sioux City brothers have been sentenced to federal prison for the armed robbery of two drug dealers.

Officials say 23-year-old Jamal Dean was sentenced Thursday to life in prison after being found guilty of several convictions, including carjacking and two counts of robbery, among other convictions. His 25-year-old brother, Levon Dean Jr., was sentenced to more than 30 years.

According to a release, Jamal Dean was already serving a 25-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to attempted murder in the April 2013 shooting of a Sioux City police officer.

The release says the two traveled together from Nebraska to Iowa and conspired to rob local drug dealers on two occasions in April 2013. After each attack, the brothers returned to Nebraska.

Kollar spent the last six seasons in Houston, five of them under new Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak. With the Texans, he worked with stars J.J. Watt and Mario Williams.

He’s also served as defensive line coach for Buffalo (2007-08), St. Louis (2001-05) and Atlanta (1990-2000).

Kollar spent eight seasons in the NFL with the Buccaneers and Bengals, who drafted him in the first round out of Montana State in 1974.

AAA: Record Number of Nebraska Motorcyclists Killed in January

fatal-motorcycle-crashIn 2012, Nebraska recorded the first motorcycle fatality on record for the month of January.

With this month’s mild temperatures, many motorcyclists are out on the roadways enjoying the unusual, warmer temperatures.

Tragically, during the past two weeks, three motorcyclists have lost their lives in crashes on Nebraska roadways, setting a new all-time high death toll for the month of January.

AAA is urging all drivers to be on the lookout for motorcyclists in the traffic mix.

Before attempting to make a left turn, train your mind and eyes to always look for motorcycles approaching from the opposite direction. If you’re preparing to change lanes, use the three step process.  Always use your turn signals, check mirrors specifically looking for motorcyclists, and turn your head to check your blind spot where a motorcycle can easily be hidden from view.  Never tailgate a motorcyclist or change lanes abruptly in front of one.

Keep in mind your spinning rear tires can make a small rock in the roadway become a dangerous flying projectile.

While driving, always avoid dangerous distractions, such as using wireless communication devices, which take your mind and eyes off the road.   New motorcycle operators are encouraged to take a rider training course and wear bright, reflective clothing while riding.

Experienced riders should consider taking an advanced course to refresh their defensive driving skills.

Hot Huskers Take Aim at Surging Hawkeyes Monday

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballTwo of the Big Ten’s hottest teams go head-to-head Monday night, when No. 16 Nebraska clashes with No. 20 Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in a rematch of the 2014 Big Ten Championship Game.

Tip-off between the Huskers (15-3, 5-2 Big Ten) and the Hawkeyes (15-3, 6-1 Big Ten) in Iowa City is set for 8 p.m. (central) with live national TV coverage from the Big Ten Network, with Eric Collins and Mary Murphy calling the action. Live radio coverage will be provided by the Husker Sports Network, with Matt Coatney and Jeff Griesch on the call on stations across the network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln, 93.3 FM in Omaha and 880 AM in Lexington. Free live audio also will be available on Huskers.com.

Nebraska, which won the 2014 Big Ten Tournament title with a 72-65 win over the Hawkeyes in Indianapolis, storms into Iowa riding a five-game winning streak. The Huskers ran to an impressive 89-72 win at Wisconsin on Thursday night. The Big Red’s last three wins have been by double digits. Although senior starter Brandi Jeffery missed her first game of the season with a minor knee injury, the Huskers erupted for 53 first-half points against the Badgers. Jeffery is day-to-day and could return against Iowa.

Despite Jeffery’s injury, the Huskers are the healthiest they have been all season, and Nebraska’s young players are providing their most significant contributions of the year. Freshman guard Natalie Romeo started in place of Jeffery, producing nine points. In her first career start against Penn State on Jan. 15, Romeo connected on six threes to finish with a game-high 18 points. Fellow freshmen Chandler Smith and Jasmine Cincore have also provided significant contributions off the bench the past week.

All-American Rachel Theriot continues to lead the Huskers. The 6-0 point guard is averaging 17.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists. Senior starters Emily Cady (12.7 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 3.1 apg), Tear’a Laudermill (12.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.6 apg) and Hailie Sample (7.4 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 1.7 apg) fired on all cylinders at Wisconsin, combining for 53 points on 22-of-35 shooting (.629), including 7-of-14 threes.

The experienced Hawkeyes, who join Nebraska in returning four starters from last season, are flying high. Iowa owns a four-game winning streak that includes a 76-70 home win over Michigan on Thursday to improve to 11-0 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena this season. Iowa has won nine of its last 10 overall.

Players Union Files Grievance Against NFL on Conduct Policy

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — The NFL players union has filed a grievance against the league over changes to its personal conduct policy.

League officials said Friday they want players and others in the NFL to be held to stricter standards. The NFL said in a statement: “Clearly, the union does not share that belief.”

Officials for the NFL Players Association did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The union and the league have been at odds over the personal conduct policy since both groups began navigating the Ray Rice domestic violence case.

Union officials have said they want to open up the personal conduct policy to collective bargaining to negotiate changes, while NFL executives have said the current contract gives them the leeway to make necessary changes.

The NFL said in its statement Friday that it consulted with the union, plus current and former players and other experts before making changes.
