Daycare Worker Charged After Video Captures Kicking

child-abuseHOLIDAY, Fla. (AP) — A daycare worker on Florida’s Gulf Coast faces child abuse charges after authorities say video captured her kicking a 16-month-old girl several times.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office reports 49-year-old Linda Klemm was supervising children Saturday at Kids Stop-N-Play in Holiday when surveillance video captured Klemm kicking the top of a sleeping child’s head and then dragging the bottom of her foot across the left side of the child’s face. About 10 minutes later, after the child falls back asleep, Klemm is seen forcefully kicking the child.

The child’s mother reportedly noticed abrasions when she picked the girl up later and called authorities. Deputies responded and reviewed the surveillance video.

Klemm was jailed Saturday and then released Sunday on a $5,000 bail. It wasn’t clear if she had an attorney.

Nebraska Bill Proposes Stricter Liquor Laws for Buses, Limos

liquor-salesLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Party buses could lose the image as a safe haven for binge drinking under a measure proposed in the Nebraska Legislature.

Sen. Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha introduced a bill Tuesday that would create liquor licenses for limousines, charter buses and pedal-pub vehicles.

The bill would treat these vehicles the same as airlines or train cars, which are subject to liquor regulations and have legal responsibilities for their passengers.

Nordquist says party buses operate in an unregulated environment and encourage underage drinking. In October, a Lincoln college student was struck and killed while walking along Interstate 80 after riding a party bus.

Nebraska Farm Bureau Endorses 4 Property Tax Measures

NE-Farm-BureauLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Farm Bureau has endorsed four measures designed to lower property taxes for farmers and ranchers.

President Steve Nelson said Tuesday that the bills would ease the financial burden on producers.

The bills were introduced by Sens. Lydia Brasch of Bancroft and Dan Watermeier of Syracuse. Two measures would lower the taxable value of agricultural land, although one would only apply to schools. Those schools would likely see an increase in state aid.

A third measure would send 20 percent of state income taxes collected in a local school district back to that district. Under current law, the state only returns 12 percent.

The fourth proposal would boost the state’s property tax credit fund by $60 million annually.

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Kawhi Leonard had 17 points and 15 rebounds in another strong outing since returning from a hand injury, and the San Antonio Spurs won their fourth in a row by beating the Denver Nuggets 109-99 on Tuesday night.

Tony Parker scored 18 points and Tim Duncan added 16, all in the second half, to help the Spurs beat the Nuggets for the fifth straight time.

Leonard has been a big part of San Antonio’s recent surge, playing for the third time since returning from a bruised hand that had sidelined him for the previous 15 games.

Kenneth Faried had 26 points and 14 rebounds for the Nuggets, who lost their fourth straight. Arron Afflalo added 21 points.

Shields Scores 15, Nebraska Hangs on to Beat Minnesota 52-49

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Shavon Shields scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and Nebraska survived an eight-minute field-goal drought to end the game to beat Minnesota 52-49 on Tuesday night.

The Cornhuskers (11-7, 3-3 Big Ten) made 11 of their last 12 free throws after starting 3 for 9 from the line. Benny Parker made two with 25 seconds left to make it a three-point game, and the Gophers missed three straight 3-pointers before the final buzzer.

Minnesota (12-8, 1-6) has lost six of its last seven games. Five of the Gophers’ six conference losses have been by five points or less.

Terran Petteway added 11 points for the Huskers in a slog of a game that had 33 field goals and 31 turnovers.

Andre Hollins had 21 points for the Gophers, who shot a season-low 30.8 percent from the field and made only 9 of 19 free throws. Joey King added 11 points.

First 26 Players Chosen for Pro Bowl Teams by Irvin, Carter

Pro Bowl NFLPHOENIX (AP) — The first 26 players have been drafted by the two Pro Bowl teams, with the remainder from more glamorous positions to be chosen in a televised event Wednesday night.

The players were picked Tuesday after Dallas running back DeMarco Murray and Cleveland cornerback Joe Haden were selected co-captains for Michael Irvin’s team. Houston defensive end J.J. Watt and Pittsburgh wide receiver Antonio Brown were chosen by Chris Carter as co-captains of his team.

After Tuesday’s introductory news conference, Irvin and Carter drafted players from lower-profile positions — guards, centers, fullbacks, interior defensive linemen, placekickers, punters, special teams players, and return specialists. The rest will be drafted in an event to be televised by the NFL Network on Wednesday night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs announced Tuesday that Tyler Bray has torn the ACL in his left knee, putting his future with the franchise in doubt and creating space for Terrelle Pryor at backup quarterback.

Bray spent last season on injured reserve after spraining an ankle in preseason. The move allowed the Chiefs to keep him along with Alex Smith, Chase Daniel and Aaron Murray. Pryor, a former Raiders quarterback, recently agreed to a deal with the Chiefs.

Among the players that Kansas City signed to futures deals was wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers. The former star began his career at Tennessee but transferred to Tennessee Tech after admitting to failing several drug tests.

He played for Buffalo and Indianapolis. In five games with the Colts, he had 14 catches for 192 yards.

Senior Hailie Sample added a strong performance with 15 points, while fellow senior Brandi Jeffery produced one of the best all-around games of her career with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Tear’a Laudermill, who scored 21 points and hit five threes in last year’s 71-70 overtime win at Wisconsin, pitched in 10 first-half points for the Big Red against the Boilermakers.

Nebraska’s win over Purdue snapped a five-game losing streak in the series with the Boilers. On the flip side, the Huskers own a five-game winning streak against Wisconsin. The series has been defined by close games, including NU’s one-point OT win last year and a 55-53 win on Feb. 28, 2013. Four of NU’s five wins have been by single digits with all three wins in Madison decided by six points or less.

Thursday night’s game will mark the third straight meeting in the series in Madison, and the seventh time in 11 games that the teams have met on Wisconsin’s home court.

The Badgers bring a 7-10 record and a 3-4 Big Ten mark into the contest. Wisconsin is coming off a 73-63 loss to No. 24 Rutgers at the Kohl Center on Sunday, but notched a 65-56 win over Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind., on Jan. 15. Wisconsin is 5-3 at the Kohl Center this season, including decisive Big Ten wins over Michigan (63-53) and Penn State (65-46).
