Omaha Mayor Says Now’s Not the Time to Merge Crime Labs

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha’s mayor says now’s not the time to merge the city and county crime labs.

Mayor Jean Stothert (STAH’-thurt) said she’s open to the idea, but now’s the wrong time.

Stothert says she first wants to ensure that Douglas County’s crime lab becomes accredited, and then she wants to assess the results of a five-year agreement to share services. That deal went into effect Jan. 1.

The county has been checking the fiscal impact of a lab merger, and on Tuesday Douglas County Board member Mike Boyle suggested merging the Omaha Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Stothert says that as the city grows and the county’s jurisdiction shrinks, merging the police forces would be worth discussing, but not yet.

Woman Pleads Not Guilty to Embezzlement in Chadron

ne-supreme-court-gavelCHADRON, Neb. (AP) — A 25-year-old woman has pleaded not guilty to allegations that she stole thousands of dollars from her former employer in Chadron.

Danielle Fry, of Red Cloud, on Tuesday entered her pleas to four counts of felony theft.

Court documents say that a representative of Sandstone Real Estate contacted the Nebraska State Patrol in February and reported that he thought a former employee had embezzled from the business. Fry worked as a secretary and receptionist at Sandstone from August 2009 until Dec. 12, 2013. According to the documents, a CPA report said $56,500 was missing from Sandstone’s bank deposits over the period of January 2011 to January 2014.

Sheriff: Nebraska Man Killed After Bales Knock Him to Ground

boyd-county-sheriffSPENCER, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 65-year-old man has died in northern Nebraska after being knocked to the ground by falling bales of alfalfa.

The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon around 5¼ miles west of Spencer. The victim was identified as David Kocian.

The Boyd County sheriff’s department says in a news release that Kocian and another man were loading the bales onto a semitrailer when a stack of three bales fell over, knocking Kocian to the ground.

The department says Kocian was taken to Niobrara Valley Hospital in Lynch, where he was pronounced dead.

Longtime Neb. Senator Chambers Seeks to End Death Penalty

ernie-chambersLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A longtime Nebraska senator who has fought for decades to eliminate the death penalty is trying again.

Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha introduced a repeal measure for the 38th time on Wednesday.

Chambers is the longest-serving state senator in Nebraska’s history, having served from 1971 to 2009. He left the Legislature due to term limits but was elected again in 2013.

His measure would replace the death penalty with a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. In the bill, Chambers rails against the death penalty as a failure that has harmed the state’s reputation for fairness, decency and the dignity of human life.

Last year, his repeal bill was voted out of committee but killed on the floor by a legislative filibuster.

NFL to Hold Combine for Veteran Players

nfl_logo2011-medThe NFL is adding a combine for veteran players to go with the massive event it holds for potential draftees.

The veterans’ combine will take place March 22 at the Arizona Cardinals’ training facility in Phoenix. That is about one month after the regular combine in Indianapolis for rookies.

Matt Birk, director of football development, told the 32 teams about the new combine Thursday. It will be open to veteran free agents who will participate in position-specific drills, timing and testing.

In the past, some veteran free agents have been included in the NFL’s regional combines held for draft-eligible players. But the new format will serve to isolate and consolidate veteran free agents for a more-focused evaluation.

The league expects to invite about 100 free agents to the Arizona combine.

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. (AP) — San Diego’s Petco Park will host baseball’s All-Star game in 2016, making the second straight year the game will be played at a National League site.

This summer’s game will be played in Cincinnati on July 14. The same league hasn’t hosted the game in consecutive years since 2006 at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park and 2007 at San Francisco’s AT&T Park.

Bud Selig made the announcement Thursday at the conclusion of his final owners’ meeting as baseball commissioner.

MLS Renames MVP Award after Landon Donovan

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Major League Soccer has renamed its Most Valuable Player award after Landon Donovan, its career scoring leader who retired last month after helping establish the league and boost the prominence of the U.S. national team.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced the decision Thursday before the MLS draft, calling Donovan’s decision to join the league in 2001 “one of the most important milestones in our history.”

Donovan wiped away tears as he watched a video tribute inside a hotel ballroom.

The 32-year-old was voted MLS’s MVP in 2009 and won his record sixth MLS Cup last month when the Los Angeles Galaxy defeated New England. Donovan says he’s “eternally grateful” MLS players will have the opportunity to win the Landon Donovan MVP Award.

Designed by Tiffany & Co., the foot-tall award displays Donovan’s silhouette and the new crest MLS will use this year in its 20th season.

EPA Encourages Home Radon Testing

radonIn recognizing January as National Radon Action Month, EPA encourages Americans around the country to test their homes for this naturally occurring radioactive gas and make 2015 a healthier, safer new year.

“Many people don’t realize that radon is the second cause of lung cancer after smoking,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “The good news is radon exposure is preventable. Testing and fixing for radon will save thousands of lives, prevent burdensome health care costs, and make America’s homes and schools safer for future generations.”

Each year about 21,000 Americans die from lung cancer caused by exposure to radon. Testing is the only way to know if a home has elevated levels of radon. The U.S. Surgeon General and EPA recommend taking action to reduce the radon level if it’s at or above 4 picocuries per Liter (pCi/L) of air.

Affordable do-it-yourself radon test kits are available online, at many home improvement and hardware stores, or you can hire a qualified radon professional.

If your test result is 4 pCi/L or more, you should contact a qualified radon-reduction or mitigation contractor.

A professionally installed radon reduction system removes the radon from beneath your home and discharges it harmlessly outside. That’s done by using a vent pipe and exhaust fan.

Taking action to reduce your exposure to radon is also a long-term health investment. A working mitigation system is a positive selling point for homes on the market; in many areas a radon test is a standard part of real estate transactions. If you’re building a new home, work with your builder to include radon-resistant construction techniques.

More information on how to test, obtain a test kit, contact your state radon office, and find a qualified radon professional is available at https://www.epa.gov/radon or by calling 1-800-SOS-RADON.
