North Platte Community College is preparing for a journey “beyond imagination” – one that will never be replicated.

Jim Wand, hypnotist, will perform at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 in the McDonald-Belton Theater. His show is free and open to the public.

“Wand is great and puts on a show suitable for all in attendance,” said Joshua York, assistant student activities director for NPCC. “He is one of the entertainers our students always ask for.”

Wand is considered to be one of the top hypnotic entertainers in the world. He has made more than 9,000 appearances in the U.S. and eight foreign countries and is a regular at casinos, clubs, colleges and corporate events.

Over 95 percent of his bookings are repeat and referral engagements. This won’t be his first trip to North Platte.

“Wand has a long-standing history with NPCC and has been coming here for quite some time,” said York. “He gets thousands of requests each year and chooses a select number of venues to perform at. We are honored to have him back.”

Wand has been involved with hypnosis for more than 30 years and has a Ph.D. in the field of psychology. He is founder and owner of Wand Enterprises, The Hypnosis Agency, in East Dubuque, Ill.

The list of celebrities he has worked with includes: Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Chris Rock, Carrot Top, Larry the Cable Guy, Sylvester Stallone, George Strait, The Judds and Rascal Flatts.

Wand has also appeared on the national FOX special, “WOW”, Comedy Central and nearly every other major TV network. Each performance is custom-designed for the audience he presents to.

Worm Farm Could Turn Lincoln School Food Scraps into Compost

wormsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Farmers Union is seeking a grant for a worm farm that would turn Lincoln school food scraps into useful compost.

The goals are to reduce waste that goes into the city landfill and create a soil product for community and school gardens. The group’s Jeremiah Picard says he’s applied for a grant of more than $169,000 from the Nebraska Environmental Trust to fund the project. A grant decision is expected in April.

Food scraps would be taken to the future worm farm and ground up by machinery and heated by air forced through it. The resulting material would be fed to red wiggler worms. The worms excrete undigested material, soil and bacteria, creating a prized natural fertilizer.

No. 17 Huskers Return Home to Tangle with Penn State

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballAfter a successful two-game Big Ten road swing, the No. 17 Nebraska women’s basketball team returns home to open a two-game conference home stand when the Huskers take on Penn State Thursday.

Tip-off between the Big Red (12-3, 2-2 Big Ten) and the Lady Lions (3-13, 0-5 Big Ten) is set for 6 p.m. (central) at Pinnacle Bank Arena with live national television coverage by the Big Ten Network with Kevin Kugler and Stephanie White on the call.

Live radio coverage will be provided by the Husker Sports Network, with Matt Coatney and Jeff Griesch on the call on stations across the network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln, 93.3 FM in Omaha and 880 AM in Lexington. Free live audio also will be available on Huskers.com.

After opening Big Ten play with back-to-back losses to No. 23 Minnesota and No. 8 Maryland, the Huskers bounced back with a pair of comeback wins at Michigan State and Illinois last week. NU trailed by six with under four minutes left before rallying for a 71-67 win over the Spartans Thursday. Sunday at Illinois, the Huskers rallied from a six-point deficit with just over eight minutes left to post a 58-53 win.

Close games are nothing new for the Big Red. In fact, nine of Nebraska’s 15 games this season have been decided by single digits, including six games by five points or less.

All-American Rachel Theriot continues to lead the Nebraska backcourt. The 6-0 guard from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, is averaging 18.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. She is coming off a 27-point performance where she carried Nebraska to victory in the second half. Theriot scored 20 points in the second half, including 11 of NU’s final 15 points.

While Theriot leads the Husker backcourt, Emily Cady provides production and mental toughness for Nebraska in the post. Cady is averaging 13.3 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Tear’a Laudermill, Hailie Sample and Brandi Jeffery round out a solid and experienced starting five.

Penn State comes to Lincoln as the three-time defending Big Ten regular-season champion, but the Lady Lions have fallen on hard times with the loss of four starters from last year’s squad that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Lady Lions shared the conference title with Michigan State last season.

New Playoff Draws Larger TV Audience for Title Game

College Football Playoff NCAAARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The new College Football Playoff succeeded in drawing a larger television audience to the championship game.

Ohio State’s 42-20 victory over Oregon on Monday averaged nearly 33.4 million viewers on ESPN. The network said Tuesday that’s up 31 percent from the almost 25.6 million for Florida State’s win over Auburn last year in the final title game of the BCS era.

The biggest audience for the four championships that had aired on ESPN was 27.3 million for the 2011 matchup between Auburn and Oregon.

The 18.2 rating Monday was the second-highest for a title game, behind the massive 21.7 for the 2006 classic between Texas and Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl.

The two semifinals had already drawn more viewers than any of the four championships on ESPN, making for the largest audiences in cable TV history before Monday’s game.

Ratings represent the percentage of homes with TVs tuned to a program.

John Elway Still Wants Peyton Manning to be His Quarterback

If John Elway gets to choose, his quarterback next season will be Peyton Manning.

His coach: To be determined.

During a news conference Tuesday, Elway said he did not press Manning for a decision on his future when they met the day after Denver’s 24-13 loss to Indianapolis in the AFC divisional playoffs.

The Broncos executive vice president said he expects to reconvene with Manning in about a month to see where he stands.

Elway said he has not contacted anybody about his open head coaching job.

He described the parting with John Fox as the culmination of a disagreement over what it takes to win the Super Bowl.

Elway stuck to a statement that has lived with him since he signed Manning: “There is no Plan B. Plan A is still the same — to win a world championship.”

Yankees Acquire Right-Hander Chris Martin from Rockies

colorado-rockiesNEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees have obtained pitching prospect Chris Martin from the Colorado Rockies for cash.

The 28-year-old right-hander made his big league debut with the Rockies last April and had a 6.89 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 15 2-3 innings over 16 relief appearances. He was 1-3 with a 4.39 ERA in 25 relief appearances last year at Triple-A Colorado Springs with 36 strikeouts in 26 2-3 innings.

The 6-foot-8 Martin had been designated for assignment last week to open a roster spot for catcher Nick Hundley.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster Tuesday, the Yankees designated right-hander Gonzalez Germen for assignment.

Former Nebraska Congressman Lands Job at DC Law Firm

Lee Terry

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Former Republican Rep. Lee Terry, who represented Nebraska’s Omaha-centric congressional district, has found a job at a District of Columbia law firm on K Street, home to many of the city’s influential lobbying firms.

Terry says he has been hired as a senior adviser at the government relations and public policy firm.

Under federal law, members of the House must wait one year after leaving office before engaging in lobbying activity.

Like many former members of Congress, Terry’s new job will see him advise clients on legislative matters during his cooling-off period, during which he cannot have direct contact with lawmakers.

Terry served 16 years as Nebraska’s 2nd District congressman, but lost his bid for a ninth term in November to Democrat Brad Ashford.

Terminally Ill Eminem Fan Dies Day After Rapper’s Visit

rainbow-connectionROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) — A terminally ill Detroit-area teenager who was surprised by a visit from rapper Eminem has died.

Rainbow Connection Executive Director Mary Grace McCarter said Tuesday that the parents of 17-year-old Gage Garmo told her that he died Monday in their Rochester Hills home.

Gage had a wish fulfilled when Detroit native Eminem stopped by Sunday evening. The Detroit Free Press says the pair sat in the family’s living room talking about hip-hop and football.

Gage was diagnosed with bone cancer three years ago, when he was a freshman at Rochester High School.

Friends and classmates used social media to spread Gage’s wish to meet Eminem, his musical hero, after he learned last week that he had just days left to live.

Michigan-based charity Rainbow Connection set up the meeting.

Nebraska Official Disavows ‘Half Breed’ Reference to Obama

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska state school board member has dissociated himself from a blog posting that referred to President Barack Obama as a “half breed.”

On Monday Board of Education member Pat McPherson said on his “Objective Conservative” blog that he strongly disavowed the post’s racist tones and that he’d taken action to avert any future racist references.

The post included this reference:

“Now our great Black Leader (actually, if he were a Republican the liberals would call him what he is — a half-breed) in Washington wants to give everyone a free community college education.”

McPherson says he didn’t write the piece but took responsibility for not editing it before it was posted earlier Monday by someone he wouldn’t name. The post was removed.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The AL champion Royals and Ned Yost have agreed on a one-year contract extension that will keep the manager with the franchise through the 2016 season.

Yost said after leading the Royals to an improbable pennant last season that he hoped to manage a few more years. His contract had been set to expire after the 2015 season.

Yost became the Royals’ manager in May 2010 and presided over a massive rebuilding effort that culminated with the end of a 29-year playoff drought. The Royals took the San Francisco Giants to the seventh game of the World Series before their season finally ended.

The longest-tenured manager in club history, Yost will soon become its winningest. He has 373 victories, trailing only Dick Howser (404) and Whitey Herzog (410).
