NP Man, Woman Arrested in Meth Investigation

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.–A North Platte man and woman are facing felony charges following a drug investigation by local and state law enforcement.

At around 1:30 p.m., on January 8, officers with the North Platte Police and investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol responded to a residence in the 200 block of East North River Road.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, law enforcement had received information regarding suspected drug activity at that location.

Officers made contact with 34-year-old Rachel Humphrey and 26-year-old Ryan Gabel at the residence.

Brown said Gabel was allowed to leave.

A subsequent search revealed drug paraphernalia and a small baggie of methamphetamine.

Humphrey was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and charged with felony possession of methamphetamine.

On January 9, officers made contact with Gabel, who they believe was under the influence of meth, and interviewed him.

Authorities, Owners Think Dogs Being Stolen in Nebraska

puppyGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Authorities and some owners suspect someone or some people have been stealing dogs in central Nebraska.

Howard County Sheriff Tom Busch said a spate of reports to his department started around Dec. 1 and that so far 11 dogs have been reported missing. Busch says, “I do believe that there’s someone taking them.”

Law enforcement officials in Sherman and Merrick counties say they have gotten reports of missing dogs and have heard of others.

Laurie Dethloff is executive director of the Central Nebraska Humane Society in Grand Island, and she says her staff has heard about incidents in Howard and Adams counties and in McCook. Dethloff says the reports are unlike anything she’s heard in the eight years she’s been at the shelter.

Manning’s Future Murky after Another Playoff Disappointment

Peyton-Manning-Denver-BroncDENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning hedged on returning next year to play for the Denver Broncos.

Following a 24-13 loss to Indianapolis in the AFC divisional playoffs on Sunday, the 38-year-old, five-time MVP was asked if he planned to return for the 2015 season.

“I guess I just can’t give that simple answer, I’m processing it,” Manning said. “So, I can’t say that.”

As recently as Christmas Eve, Manning said he planned on being back next season if the Broncos wanted him.

Manning went 26 for 46 for 211 yards and a touchdown against the Colts. He struggled to find his rhythm, as has been the case since mid-November, when the Broncos started running the ball more.

He said he’s been dealing with a thigh bruise since the Dec. 14 game against the Chargers, but said it felt good enough to play with coming into the playoffs.

Luck leads Colts to Upset of Manning and Broncos 24-13

DenverBroncosDENVER (AP) — Andrew Luck threw two touchdown passes and the Indianapolis Colts upset Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos 24-13 Sunday in the AFC playoffs.

The Colts (13-5) advanced to the AFC conference championship next weekend in New England. The Patriots (13-4) rallied past Baltimore 35-31 Saturday in the other AFC divisional playoff.

The Broncos (12-5) were left to deal with the hangover of yet another playoff debacle — and maybe questions about Manning’s future and that of coach John Fox, as well.

Manning, who joined the Broncos in 2012 after his release from Indy, has gone one-and-done in the playoffs a record nine times in his otherwise stellar career. That includes twice in Denver, where he’s 38-10 in the regular season but just 2-3 in the playoffs.

Overall, Manning is 11-13 in the postseason and this was one of his worst playoff performances ever.

Theriot leads No. 19 Nebraska past Illinois 58-53

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballCHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Rachel Theriot scored 27 points, including 10 straight as No. 19 Nebraska closed the game with a 15-4 run, to defeat Illinois 58-53 on Sunday.

The Illini (11-5, 2-2 Big Ten) were up 49-43 and looking for their second-straight win over a ranked team, when Theriot took over. She made two free throws at the 6:19 mark and when she hit a jumper with 3:06 left the Cornhuskers (12-3, 2-2) were up 53-51. Hailie Sample made a free throw, Emily Cady a jumper on a Sample assist and Brandi Jeffery made a free throw to put Nebraska up 57-51 with 14 seconds to go.

Between Amarah Coleman’s basket at 5:31 and her bucket at seven seconds, the Illini missed eight shots and had a turnover.

Coleman, a freshman, matched her career high with 18 points.
