Nebraska Tax Receipts Higher Thank Projected in December

ne-department-of-revenueLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new report says Nebraska state tax receipts in December were nearly 9 percent higher than projected.

The Department of Revenue reported Tuesday that net receipts for the month totaled $400 million. The certified state forecast for the month was $368 million.

The report says net sales-and-use taxes, individual and corporate income, and miscellaneous taxes all came in above the month’s forecast. The largest factor was corporate income taxes, which were more than 51 percent higher than projected.

The state revenue projection was approved by the Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board in February, and updated in July to account for laws passed in the 2014 session.

The board later revised its estimate on the belief that state revenue would grow beyond the first projection, but only downward revisions are certified.

House Re-Elects Boehner as Speaker Over Tea Party Opposition

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has re-elected John Boehner to be speaker in the new Republican-led Congress, despite opposition by tea party lawmakers that underscored party divisions.

The Ohio Republican garnered the votes of 216 GOP lawmakers as Congress convened Tuesday. That was enough for him to win a third two-year term leading the House.

But in an embarrassing slap, 25 Republicans voted for other candidates or voted present. They consider Boehner to be too accommodating and not conservative enough.

Their repudiation of Boehner was an awkward display of GOP schisms at a time when party leaders want to show voters that they can govern effectively. They want to show they won’t be forced by tea party legislators into unwinnable, unpopular showdowns with President Barack Obama.

Sasse officially took office on Tuesday at a ceremony in Washington. The former Midland University president replaces Mike Johanns, a fellow Republican who stepped down after one term.

Sasse defeated Democratic hopeful Dave Domina, an attorney, in the November general election. He is now the state’s junior senator, serving alongside Republican U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer.

Sasse requested and received the desk that was previously used by Johanns and former Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, R-N.Y.

New Inspector Named at Nebraska Nuclear Power Plant

fort-calhoun-dryBLAIR, Neb. (AP) — Federal regulators have named a new resident inspector at the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant about 20 miles north of Omaha.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says Brian Cummings is one of the two inspectors monitoring operations at the plant that was offline for nearly three years between spring 2011 and December 2013.

The plant was offline for such a long period while regulators’ safety concerns were addressed and flood damage was repaired. Fort Calhoun is owned by the Omaha Public Power District.

Cummings joined the NRC last February after serving on a nuclear submarine in the U.S. Navy.

The NRC keeps at least two inspectors at every nuclear power plant. Cummings joins senior inspector Max Schneider at Fort Calhoun.

CDC: Alcohol Poisoning Kills 6 a Day, Mostly Middle-Aged Men

liquor-salesNEW YORK (AP) — To the surprise of even health officials, it turns out that most deaths from drinking too much involve middle-aged adults — not teens or college kids.

A report Tuesday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found six Americans die each day from alcohol poisoning. CDC officials said three-quarters of those deaths are adults ages 35 to 64, and most are men. CDC officials said they thought more would be younger.

The CDC searched death records from 2010 through 2012. Researchers focused on people who died after a single episode of binge drinking. Too much alcohol can shut down areas of the brain that control breathing, heart rate and temperature.

The report found an average of 2,221 alcohol poisoning deaths a year.

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police have arrested a teenager on a warrant charging him as an adult with two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of two men over the weekend.

Both men were found dead in a north-central Omaha apartment; both had been shot.

The deaths marked Omaha’s second and third homicides of 2015.
