2nd Measles Case Confirmed in Eastern Nebraska

measles-virusFREMONT, Neb. (AP) — Health officials have confirmed a second case of measles in a child residing in eastern Nebraska.

The Three Rivers Health Department, along with the Douglas County Health Department, issued a news release Thursday announcing the case. The confirmation comes after officials last week announced a woman who spent time in Omaha and Blair had been diagnosed with measles.

Officials say the child visited a childcare center and a restaurant in Blair when he or she could have infected others.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through the air through breathing, coughing or sneezing. Officials say any person exposed to it who has not been vaccinated is likely to contract the disease.

Officials have urged anyone who may have been in the patient’s vicinity to check vaccine records.

Federal Judge Won’t Delay Nebraska Gay Marriage Lawsuit

gaymarriageOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A federal judge won’t delay a lawsuit challenging Nebraska’s gay marriage ban while the U.S. Supreme Court is considering the issue for the country.

Judge Joseph Bataillon (buh-TAL’-yuhn) in Omaha declined a request from the Nebraska attorney general’s office for the delay, saying in his ruling Tuesday that the state didn’t show the delay was necessary. A spokeswoman for the attorney general declined to comment.

The lawsuit was filed in November by seven same-sex couples seeking to have their marriages recognized in Nebraska despite the state’s ban passed by voters in 2000.

The nation’s high court has announced that it will decide whether same-sex couples have a right to marry everywhere in America under the U.S. Constitution. A ruling on cases in four other states is expected by late June.

Yellowstone Oil Spill Fuels Arguments Over Keystone Pipeline

Keystone_construction_ND1-306x204BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Oil pipeline accidents have become increasingly frequent in the U.S. as Congress pushes for approval of the Keystone XL pipeline.

An Associated Press review of government accident records shows their numbers growing each year since 2009, reversing a decade-long declining trend.

Keystone would pass near where 30,000 gallons of crude spilled into Montana’s Yellowstone River earlier this month.

The recent breach temporarily fouled a city’s water supply and became the latest in a string of spills to highlight ongoing problems with maintenance of the nation’s crude pipeline network.

Yet in the politically charged debate over Keystone, its detractors aren’t the only ones seizing on the Yellowstone spill.

So are lawmakers who support the project including Montana Sen. Steve Daines.

He says Keystone would be safer than older pipelines like the one that broke.
