Heavican: Nebraska Needs More Rural Attorneys, Interpreters

Chief Justice Michael Heavican
Chief Justice Michael Heavican

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Supreme Court Chief Justice Mike Heavican says the state has a growing need for rural attorneys and for language interpreters to serve the courts.

Justice Michael Heavican told lawmakers Thursday that a shortage of lawyers in rural areas has contributed to an increase in Nebraskans who represent themselves in court. His comments came during his annual State of the Judiciary address.

The chief justice also pointed to the state’s increased reliance on interpreters for criminal defendants, victims and witnesses.

Nebraska supplied interpreters in 46 different languages for 24,000 appointments last year, a 20 percent increase from the previous year. Heavican says Spanish is still the most in-demand language.

Gov. Pete Ricketts has recommended an additional $250,000 annually for interpreter services in his budget proposal to lawmakers.

OPPD Board Delays Search for CEO Amid Concerns About Process

OPPDOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha Public Power District board has delayed action on naming a new CEO as the Omaha World-Herald considers challenging the legality of the secret process.

At a special meeting Thursday morning the board acknowledged that its choice to replace retiring CEO Gary Gates is Tim Burke, who is district vice president of customer service and public affairs. But board members tabled the resolution to promote Burke until the next regular board meeting, citing public concerns about the process.

District board chairwoman Anne McGuire said Wednesday that board members interviewed four finalists in secret last week, but the district has refused to release their names. World-Herald officials say that under the state’s open records law, the district must release information about the final four candidates.

Dynamite Attack Cancelled After Platte River Ice Jam Breaks Up

ice-jam-np-riverWATERLOO, Neb. (AP) — A Platte River ice jam near Omaha has broken up on its own, so officials have canceled plans to attack it with dynamite.

The 1½-mile-long jam had backed up river water in western Douglas County, just west of Omaha, and parts of Saunders County, threatening homes, well fields and a National Guard camp.

But the jam broke up on its own by 9:45 a.m. Thursday.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Two people with knowledge of the agreement say Wade Phillips is returning to Denver as Gary Kubiak’s defensive coordinator.

The two spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t immediately announce the hiring, which was first reported by KDCO-AM and FM Mile High Sports Radio in Denver.

Phillips, 67, interviewed for the position Tuesday.

He was Kubiak’s defensive coordinator in Houston from 2011-13 and replaced him as interim coach when Kubiak was fired by the Texans in December 2013.

Phillips has also coached the Saints, Cowboys, Bills and Broncos, where he went 16-16 from 1993-94.

He was out of football last season for the first time since 1975.
