Head of NCAA Enforcement: Academic Misconduct on Rise

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsThe head of NCAA enforcement says academic misconduct has been on the rise in college athletics and his department is handling 20 open investigations.

Vice president of enforcement Jon Duncan said Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press the cases involve both prospective and incoming athletes trying to become eligible for college competition, and enrolled athletes receiving impermissible assistance from university and athletic department personnel.

Eighteen of the cases involve Division I schools, though NCAA policies preclude Duncan from revealing which programs are under investigation.

North Carolina has been the focus of the NCAA’s most high-profile infractions case involving academics. Last year an independent investigator found that hundreds of Tar Heels athletes over nearly two decades were steered toward sham classes that gave out high grades for little work.

NFL Players Who Started Young Show More Thinking Problems

ConcussionBOSTON (AP) — A study published in the journal Neurology says NFL veterans who started playing tackle football before the age of 12 are more likely to have cognitive difficulties after their careers.

The study published Wednesday says researchers tested 42 former players on their short-term memory, mental flexibility and problem solving. It found those who picked up the sport before they were 12 functioned about 20 percent worse. Robert Stern of the Boston University School of Medicine says both groups scored below average on many of the tests.

Stern says there is a known period of critical brain development that happens around puberty.

He says the research does not lead to any simple solutions.

The study only looked at former NFL players; the conclusions cannot be generalized to a broader population.

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A central Nebraska village clerk has been accused of altering checks and cashing them to pay off a credit card.

The Buffalo County Sherriff’s Office arrested 49-year-old Wendy Stephens Tuesday. Stephens is the village clerk in Elm Creek.

According to an affidavit, a Village of Elm Creek audit revealed up to six checks believed to have been altered. The checks totaled more than $10,500 and were written from April to September.

Stephens’ attorney did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Stephens is being held on $2,000 cash bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 10.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Republican Ben Sasse has been named chairman of the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee’s Subcommittee on Livestock, Marketing, and Agriculture Security.

A news release Wednesday announcing the appointment says the subcommittee has jurisdiction over livestock issues, agricultural marketing programs, pest and disease management, agriculture security and dairy programs.

Sasse said Nebraska leads the country in red meat production and he looks forward to “standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Nebraska’s producers as we promote responsible policy and keep the future of agriculture strong.”

Retirees Ask Nebraska Senators to Expand Income Tax Cuts

taxesLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s civilian and military retirees are once again asking lawmakers for tax breaks, saying a package approved last year didn’t go far enough.

The groups argued their case Wednesday as the Revenue Committee examined three proposed tax exemptions for Social Security benefits and military retirement pay.

One measure would provide a tax exemption to Nebraskans who are at least 65 years old. Another would give tax breaks to military retirees who live in Nebraska while working and collecting retirement income. A third would phase out Nebraska’s tax on Social Security income.

Senators are expected to focus on property taxes this year, but the committee chairman, Sen. Mike Gloor of Grand Island, says senators could also make changes to income tax exemptions.

Disneyland Measles Outbreak Grows to 95 Cases

vaccinationLOS ANGELES (AP) — A measles outbreak whose spread originated at Disneyland has grown to 95 cases.

The California Department of Public Health tells the Los Angeles Times (https://lat.ms/15W9x2B) on Wednesday that 79 of those in infections are in California and 52 of them can be linked directly to Disney Parks.

The rest are in Michigan, Arizona, Utah, Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Nebraska and Mexico.

The new overall figure shows eight more cases than the 87 confirmed earlier this week.

Measles has been spreading since an outbreak linked to Southern California’s Disney parks last month. Most of those infected were not vaccinated officials have urged people to get the measles shot.

The U.S. experienced a record number of measles cases last year, with 644 infections from 27 states despite being largely eliminated in 2000.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska authorities say they caught a 31-year-old Minnesota man with nearly 30,000 marijuana pills in a U-Haul trailer attached to his car.

Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner says police noticed on Tuesday that Ryan Scott Cooper, of Plymouth, Minnesota, didn’t have a license plate on the front of his car when he was getting gas at a station in Lincoln. He says a police dog then signaled the smell of drugs coming from the attached trailer.

Officials say they searched the trailer and found 29,400 capsules filled with cannabis oil and 322 Adderall pills, along with other drugs and equipment to make the oil.

Cooper was arrested on suspicion of breaking four drug laws, including two felonies. An attorney for Cooper couldn’t be located.

2 Men Injured After Scottsbluff Cell Phone Tower Collapse

viaero-wirelessSCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Two men were transported to the hospital after they had been trapped under a collapsed cell phone tower in Scottsbluff.

The two were trapped under a Viaero Wireless tower that collapsed Wednesday. The Scottsbluff Fire Department responded to the scene.

Scottsbluff Fire Chief Dana Miller says responders were told one man fell about 10 feet, and the other fell more than 20 feet in the collapse. The tower is currently under construction.

Miller says the collapse occurred while the area is under a wind advisory, which states winds could reach 25 to 35 miles per hour and gusts could reach 50 miles per hour.

A message left with Viaero’s corporate offices in Colorado was not immediately answered. No further information has been released.

Officials to Use Dynamite if Platte River Ice Jam Remains

ice-jam-np-riverWATERLOO, Neb. (AP) — Officials say they plan to use dynamite to blast an ice jam on the Platte River if it doesn’t start moving downstream.

John Winkler, general manager of the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District, says explosives will be used if the mile-long ice jam doesn’t move by Thursday morning. The ice jam caused flooding Tuesday in western Douglas County, just west of Omaha, and parts of Saunders County.

A helicopter would be used to drop the dynamite onto the ice jam. He says he’ll join emergency management officials to assess the situation and decide whether blasting is necessary.

Winkler says no evacuations are planned at this time, and levees along the river are currently holding.
