KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A snowdrift helped deflect 10-foot flames from a wildfire that menaced a home about three miles northwest of Kearney.
The fire was reported just after 2 p.m. Sunday after an ember escaped from a burn barrel and ignited dried plants in a pasture. The fire eventually blackened around 100 acres, but no injuries have been reported.
Besides help from the snowdrift, firefighters were aided by their specially equipped four-wheel-drive grass rigs, moving rapidly to keep the flames from reaching the home and others in the area.
