Omaha Woman Says Landlord Put Belongings in Front Yard

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha woman who says she came home to find her belongings strewn about her front yard and labeled with “free” signs has told police that she believes her landlord is to blame.

The 50-year-old woman says she suspects the incident was her landlord’s way of telling her to move out. In a police report filed Friday, the woman says her landlord had previously mentioned her leaving the residence, but that she was never given an eviction notice.

The woman says a family member called her last week to tell her that her property was stacked in her front yard. She says when she returned, she discovered that many items were missing, including furniture, paintings and antique porcelain dolls.

Nebraska Senators Wade Back Into Term Limits Debate

NE LegislatureLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A proposed ballot measure to let Nebraska lawmakers serve up to 12 consecutive years is under review in a legislative committee.

Sen. Paul Schumacher of Columbus presented a new constitutional amendment Monday that would let future lawmakers serve up to two consecutive six-year terms. Schumacher says it would preserve institutional knowledge which he sees as lacking in committees.

Schumacher says a 2012 measure to expand term limits to three four-year terms didn’t pass because it was accompanied by salary increase. Schumacher’s measure focuses only on terms and would not apply to any senator currently in office.

Committee members took no action on the resolution, but some say if it advances it should be written simply and clearly to keep floor debate focused on the issue.

Manfred Says Pace of Game Rules Crucial to Luring Young Fans

mlb bigPHOENIX (AP) — Commissioner Rob Manfred says new rules intended to speed up the pace of games are aimed at luring younger fans to baseball.

Manfred, speaking publicly on the changes for the first time since they were announced last Friday, says the rules are a “measured” approach worked out with the MLB Players Association.

The new commissioner, who took over when Bud Selig retired in January, says he has four children in their 20s, and that the attention span for that generation “seems to be shorter than the rest of ours.”

This season, batters will be required to have one foot in the batter’s box and pitchers and batters will be required to be ready to go at the conclusion of television commercials.

2 Prep Girls Teams Caught Tanking, Banned from Postseason

BasketballMURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — A pair of Tennessee girls basketball high school teams have been pulled from the postseason for trying to lose a game to avoid the top-ranked team and improve their chances of advancing to the state tournament.

The programs at Riverdale (22-8), a state champion in 2013, and Smyrna also were fined $500 Monday and placed on probation for a year by the Tennessee Secondary School athletic Association.

TSSAA executive director Bernard Childress wrote Monday in letters to the schools’ principals that the teams “made a mockery” with intentional turnovers off various violations and missed free throws. The referee also reported he stopped play ordering the coaches not to make a travesty of the game with a Smyrna player about to shoot at the wrong basket.

Smyrna (21-8) won 55-29 Saturday.

West Virginia Coach Pushing April Start for College Baseball

baseballThe college baseball season would run from April to August instead of February to June under an ambitious idea pushed by West Virginia coach Randy Mazey.

Mazey said Monday he plans to finalize the proposal this fall. He would need a conference to submit it into the NCAA legislative process.

Mazey said playing in the summer would increase ticket revenue and exposure. Among other benefits: decreasing the amount of money northern programs spend on travel and raising graduation rates because players would be enrolled in summer school.

But drafted players would have to hold off signing with major-league teams that selected them in June. Also, an agreement would have to be reached with ESPN to move the College World Series from June to August.
