NP Man Gets 4-5 Years for Child Sex Assault

Scott Shoemaker

A North Platte man will spend the next four to five years in prison for sexually assaulting a young boy.

Last August, North Platte police opened a sexual assault investigation after the parents of a young boy reported that their son had been assaulted by 28-year-old Scott Shoemaker.

The boy, who was under the age of 16, alleged that Shoemaker had sexually penetrated him several weeks earlier.

In September, District Court Judge Donald Rowlands ordered that Shoemaker undergo a psychological evaluation, due to a potential not guilty by reason of insanity plea.

The evaluation determined that Shoemaker was competent to stand trial.

After reaching a plea deal with prosecutors, Shoemaker pleaded no contest to sexual assault of a child.

On Monday, Shoemaker appeared in Lincoln County District Court for sentencing.

Prior to sentencing, Shoemaker’s attorney, Kent Florom, argued that Shoemaker had saved the state the time and expense of a trial, and had prevented the victim from having to testify by entering a plea in the case.

He also noted that, prior to this, Shoemaker’s criminal record had been minimal.

Judge Rowlands agreed that Shoemaker’s record was minimal, and stated that, despite being found competent to stand trial, Shoemaker did suffer from mental illness.

He then sentenced Shoemaker to not less that four years, and not more than five years in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.

Shoemaker was given credit for 200 days already served in jail, and will be required to register as a sex offender.

2 Teens Accused of Robbing Another Teen at Cody Park

north_platte_patchTwo juveniles are facing felony charges after they allegedly robbed another teen in a North Platte park.

At around 2:10 p.m., on February 22, the North Platte Police Department opened a robbery investigation, after receiving a report from a 16-year-old male.

The victim alleged that he was at Cody Park, 1601 North Jeffers Street, when he was assaulted and his wallet was stolen.

Through their investigation, police learned that the boy had agreed to meet with a 17-year-old Stapleton boy, and another 17-year-old boy, from North Platte.

According to the victim, he met the duo at the park and, while they were talking, one of the boys assaulted him and stole his wallet, which reportedly contained around $15.00.

Police say the boy did have injuries consistent with being assaulted.

Investigators determined that there was probable cause to arrest the teens and charge them with felony robbery.

The Post is choosing not to name the suspects, pending the filing of formal charges by the Lincoln County Attorney’s Office.

Tri-City Acquires Green Bay’s Brown In Trade

Chris Brown

KEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm Head Coach Jim Hulton announced the acquisition of forward Christopher Brown from the Green Bay GamblersMonday along with a sixth round pick in Phase II of the 2015 USHL Phase II Draft in exchange for defenseman Gordi Myer and a player to be named later.

Brown, a sixth round draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2014 NHL Draft last summer, is committed to play college hockey at Boston College and was the leading scorer on the Gamblers’ roster with 13 goals and 19 assists in 43 games.

The forward, a native of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., is in his first USHL season and just celebrated his 19th birthday on Sunday.

“All the reports that we got from the internal scouting we’ve done is that Chris Brown absolutely fits our mold,” said Hulton. “He’s a 200-foot player who is very responsible away from the puck, a front-line penalty killer and power play player, and a top face-off guy. He comes from a hockey pedigree and understands the intangibles that it takes to be a successful player and a successful team member.”

Hulton also said that the common denominator from all the reports he got was that Brown is a responsible player with the kind of character he was looking to add to the team.

“We’ve been looking all season for a bit of a puck distributor in the middle and we think with Chris we’ve achieved that without giving up anything from our identity,” Hulton said.

Myer will head to Green Bay after appearing in 32 games with Tri-City this season.

“It was a difficult decision,” Hulton said. “Any time you have to add, there’s a necessary deletion and there’s a cost to acquire a player of Chris’s ability. We think Gordi has an extremely bright future and is going to be a force to be reckoned with in this league. He was a great teammate, very coachable, and improved in leaps and bounds this season. We wish him all the best and thank him for his time as a member of the Storm.”

Brown is coming off a two-assist game against Youngstown on Sunday. During the 2013-14 season, he played for Cranbrook-Kingswood Upper School in Bloomfield Township, Mich.

“I think this helps us set up for the run to clinch a playoff spot and then hopefully to have success in the playoffs,” Hulton said.

This weekend Western Conference leading Sioux City will travel to Kearney for a two-game series. Friday’s contest begins at 7:30 p.m., whileSaturday’s gets underway at 7:05.

Trade, Injury Talk Takes Toll on Rockies’ Troy Tulowitzki

Troy Tulowitzki
Troy Tulowitzki

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Everywhere Troy Tulowitzki goes, he hears two questions: Can he stay healthy? And will he be traded?

The four-time All-Star shortstop reported early to Colorado Rockies camp on Monday with a steely resolve. He acknowledges the trade talk affected him in the offseason because his name seemingly was mentioned “every single day, and pretty hard.”

Tulowitzki is ahead of schedule as he again comes off surgery. This time it was on his hip. He’s also been sidelined with wrist, groin and rib injuries. It’s why he’s missed 222 games over the past three seasons.

Still owed at least $118 million on a contract that runs through 2020, Tulowitzki’s future is uncertain with a Rockies team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2009.
