NFL’s Competition Committee May Consider Replay Expansion

nfl_logo2011-medINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Rams coach Jeff Fisher says the NFL’s competition committee has an unprecedented number of proposals to expand replay reviews next season.

Fisher is the committee co-chair, and he says he’s not sure it will happen. Fisher says everything currently is reviewable — other than penalties — and that it may take too much time to review questionable calls frame by frame.

Footballs also are expected to be part of the discussion, eventually. Fisher says football-maker Wilson usually makes a presentation before the committee, but that it will likely be delayed this year until after the NFL completes its investigation into the underinflated balls used by New England during the AFC championship win against Indianapolis.

MLB Makes Small Pace of Game Changes, Passes on Bigger Steps

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball is making some changes to speed up the length of games but it won’t implement some of the more radical proposals to make games shorter.

The league and the players’ union announced an agreement Friday to enforce the rule requiring a hitter to keep at least one foot in the batter’s box in most cases. MLB also will post stadium clocks timing pitching changes and between-inning breaks.

MLB did not institute many of the ideas experimented with during the Arizona Fall League, such as a 20-second clock between pitches, a limitation of pitcher’s mound conferences involving catchers and managers, and no-pitch intentional walks.

Penalties for violating the new rules start May 1 and will involve only fines. In the AFL, strikes and balls were called against violators.

GERING, Neb. (AP) — A district court judge has sentenced a Wyoming teenager to at least 60 years in prison for killing a western Nebraska jailer.

Sixteen-year-old Dylan Cardeilhac, of Torrington, Wyoming, was convicted in November of second-degree murder for strangling Scotts Bluff County jailer Amanda Baker in February 2014.

Judge Travis O’Gorman sentenced Cardeilhac on Thursday to 60 years to life in prison. He said that Cardeilhac’s criminal history and his lack of remorse demonstrated that the public needed protection from the teen.

Cardeilhac was sentenced in May to a maximum of 15 years in prison on separate charges of armed robbery and use of a weapon in a convenience store robbery.

His latest sentence on the murder conviction will be served consecutively to his sentence in the robbery case.
