This Land Ain’t Your Land: NP Man Accused of Subleasing Lincoln County Land That Wasn’t His

Riley Hubert
Riley Hubert

A North Platte man who apparently took the lyrics, “This land is your land, this land is my land,” a little too serious, is now facing a felony theft charge.

On February 9, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a subject, in Heartwell, Nebraska, who claimed he was the victim of an internet scam.

The caller said he answered an ad on Craigslist to lease pasture land in Lincoln County.

The man set up a meeting with the advertiser in Sutherland, on February 6, to view the land.

The victim told deputies he met with 33-year-old Riley Hubert, who led him to an area north of Sutherland and showed him some open range land.

Hubert told the man he was currently leasing the land and wanted to sublease it for summer grazing.

Hubert and the alleged victim then came to an agreement on the lease, and the man paid Hubert the first half, a total of $19,500.

The man said after a few days he became suspicious of the lease and contacted law enforcement.

Deputies investigated and learned that Hubert didn’t have the original lease on the pasture land, and the land owner had no contract with Hubert.

Through their investigation, deputies learned that Hubert had purchased a pickup and fled to Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Deputies contacted the Cheyenne Police Department and, on February 12, Hubert was arrested in Cheyenne on a Lincoln County warrant.

Authorities say Hubert was in possession of a large amount of cash at the time of his arrest, and also numerous items that he had recently purchased.

Hubert signed extradition paperwork and was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center on February 16.  He’s been charged with felony theft by deception.

According to the LCSO, Hubert had recently bonded out of jail for similar scams.  That bond has been revoked.

The investigation is ongoing.

Vape ‘Em If You Got ‘Em: Jails Sell E-Cigarettes to Inmates

ecigaretteCINCINNATI (AP) — E-cigarettes keep popping up for sale at county jails around the country even as some government officials, schools and health experts urge tighter control over the devices, especially in public buildings.

The increasingly popular electronic cigarettes are showing up at jails where officials say they have seen benefits from selling the devices. They say e-cigarettes calm agitated inmates, who aren’t allowed in most jails and prisons to use tobacco-burning cigarettes.

Jail officials say e-cigarettes also reduce instances of smuggled-in traditional cigarettes and loose tobacco. And the additional revenue from the sales can be used to buy uniforms, food and other inmate supplies at a savings to taxpayers.

Still some law enforcement officials and others raise ethical questions and worry about potential health risks.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts has signed the first bills sent to him since he took office.

Ricketts approved nine so-called cleanup bills on Tuesday that are introduced every year to repeal obsolete state laws, often for pilot programs and commissions that are no longer in effect. Those measures were among the first passed by lawmakers this year.

Ricketts was sworn into office last month as the state’s 40th governor, replacing the term-limited Dave Heineman as the state’s chief executive.

Repeat Offender Accused of Assaulting Woman at NP Truck Stop

Tristen Campbell
Tristen Campbell

A 24-year-old North Platte man has been charged with a felony after he allegedly assaulted a woman at a North Platte truck stop.

At around 12: 45 a.m., on February 16, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to Love’s Travel Stop, 3211 South Newberry Road, on the report of a domestic disturbance.

According to witnesses, a man and a woman were seen fighting and had, at one point, been down on the ground.

Officers arrived and made contact with a 22-year-old female, and 24-year-old Tristen Campbell.

The female told officers that she and Campbell had gotten into and argument, and he had “smacked her in the back of the head.”

She said Campbell then demanded that she remove her property from the vehicle.

As she began walking toward the vehicle, she said Campbell grabbed her and began to yell at her.  She stated that this caused her to fall to the ground.

Following further investigation, officers determined that there was probable cause to arrest Campbell and charge him with domestic assault.  Due to prior domestic assault convictions, the charge was enhanced to a felony.

According to arrest records, Campbell has a plethora of arrests for assault, including domestic, and other charges dating back to 2008.

Campbell is being held on $25,000 bond.

Senior forwards Emily Cady and Hailie Sample combined for 17 points and 17 rebounds to help the Huskers.

While Nebraska got back on the winning track after dropping three straight games to top-25 teams, the Wildcats extended their winning streak to five straight games with a 63-62 win at Michigan on Saturday afternoon. Each of the last four games for Northwestern have been possession games, including a 73-65 overtime win at Purdue, a 64-58 home win over Illinois and a 75-69 victory at Indiana. Chiefs Begin Clearing Space by Releasing WRs Avery, Jenkins

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs released wide receivers Donnie Avery and A.J. Jenkins on Tuesday as they began to clear roster and salary cap space ahead of what could be a busy offseason.

Kansas City is facing the loss of All-Pro linebacker Justin Houston and center Rodney Hudson in free agency. The Chiefs are expected to meet with Houston’s representatives about a long-term deal on Wednesday in Indianapolis, and the possibility remains of using the franchise tag on him.

Either way, the Chiefs could be facing some difficult financial choices if they want to keep Houston or Hudson, or both. Releasing Avery and Jenkins saved the Chiefs nearly $5 million, though it makes targeting a wide receiver in free agency or the draft a priority.

Judge Officiates Wyoming Man’s Wedding, Then Sentences Him

gavel-moreCODY, Wyo. (AP) — A Wyoming man’s “I do” wasn’t followed by a kiss, cake or honeymoon but a prison sentence for an August crime spree.

25-year-old Israel Silva wore an orange jail jumpsuit and shackles when District Judge Steven Cranfill wed him and his 19-year-old bride in a Cody courtroom last week. The bride stayed 15 feet away from Silva to comply with the jail’s “no contact” rules.

Right after, Cranfill sentenced Silva to six to 10 years in prison for a drunken crime spree in which he stole two pickup trucks, crashed one, fired shots at other vehicles and led police on a chase that reached speeds of up to 110 mph.

Silva is disputing the county attorney’s arguments that he owes nearly $46,000 in restitution.

Nebraska Lawmakers Begin Debate on Voter Identification Bill

voteLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers have started to debate a bill that would require voters to show government identification at the polls.

The proposal faces strong resistance, despite arguments from supporters Tuesday that Nebraska’s version includes safeguards to protect voters from being disenfranchised.

Republican Secretary of State John Gale says Nebraska hasn’t seen widespread voter fraud, although there have been isolated cases.

Sen. Tyson Larson of O’Neill says his measure would let voters cast provisional ballots without identification and would allow alternate forms of ID, including those issued by tribal governments.

Opponents say it’s a government mandate when there’s no evidence that voter fraud exists. They also say it contradicts Nebraska’s constitution, which forbids any hindrance or impediment on qualified voters to exercise their right.

Immunity Bill for Intoxicated Minors Seeking Help Advances in Nebraska Legislature

ne-legislature-13LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Intoxicated minors who seek medical help for themselves or a friend could avoid alcohol charges under a bill advanced by Nebraska lawmakers.

Lawmakers voted Tuesday to give the measure first-round approval.

The measure by Sen. Adam Morfeld of Lincoln would give limited legal immunity to underage drinkers who are intoxicated, call for medical assistance and cooperate with authorities. Immunity would only extend to alcohol charges.

Morfeld says the bill is designed to encourage underage drinkers to seek medical attention for alcohol poisoning without having to fear a criminal conviction. The proposal is backed by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, student leaders and Lincoln police.

Some senators say the university needs to start allowing alcohol on campus for those of legal age, arguing that the current prohibition leads to riskier behavior off-campus.
