The North Platte First Nationals American Legion baseball team will have signups next month.
Signups will be at The Sports Shoppe at 1320 South Cottonwood Street in North Platte. The signups will last two days, Tuesday, March 10 and Wednesday, March 11 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
American Legion baseball is open to players born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2002.
The First Nationals Seniors team finished with a record of 31-18 last year, while the Juniors finished with a 29-13 record and won the A-7 District championship.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha man convicted of first-degree murder in four 2013 shootings that occurred shortly after he was released from prison is expected back in court Tuesday.
Nikko Jenkins was convicted last year after he pleaded no contest to the charges, but his sentencing has been on hold because of questions about his mental competency.
Douglas County District Judge Peter Bataillon is expected to receive a report from the state’s psychiatrists on whether Jenkins is competent enough for sentencing.
A three-judge panel will determine whether the 28-year-old receives the death penalty.
Bataillon may also address some of the hand-written motions Jenkins has filed from prison. Jenkins has asked to have a new lawyer appointed, and he wants certain police officers subpoenaed for his sentencing hearing.
A Ogallala man has been charged following a hit-and-run accident, in North Platte, on Valentine’s Day.
At around 11:50 a.m., on February 14, North Platte Police officers on patrol were advised that a black Dodge pickup was involved in a hit-and-run accident near Phillip Avenue and Cottonwood Street.
This same vehicle was also believed to be the suspect vehicle in multiple reports of erratic and dangerous driving, according Officer Rodney Brown.
Brown said an officer eventually located the vehicle parked in the middle of the westbound lane on Burlington Street, and observed the driver, 41-year-old Adam Davis, standing beside the vehicle urinating.
The officer made contact with Davis and attempted to conduct a DUI investigation, but Davis became defiant and belligerent.
With the assistance of an off-duty Animal Control Officer, who also reported nearly being run off the road by Davis, the officer was able to gain control of Davis and place him in restraints. Police say the officer sustained an injury to his hand during the struggle.
A subsequent search of Davis’ vehicle lead to the discovery of a loaded .410 shotgun, which was in the front seat of the pickup.
Davis was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center, where officers again attempted to conduct a DUI investigation. However, Davis continued to be combative with officers and staff at the jail.
In the end, Davis was jailed and charged with 2nd offense DUI, refusal to submit to a chemical test, driving under suspension, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of an accident, having a loaded shotgun on a highway and 3rd degree assault on an officer.
As of Tuesday morning, Davis was being held without bond.
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (AP) — Prosecutors are expected to rest their case Tuesday in the trial of the former Marine accused in the fatal shootings of “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle and his friend.
Eddie Ray Routh has confessed to the February 2013 slayings but has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Defense attorneys say Routh was insane when Kyle and Chad Littlefield took him to a shooting range to provide support and camaraderie. Prosecutors say he knew his actions were wrong and should be convicted of capital murder. They aren’t seeking the death penalty.
In a video confession shown to jurors Monday, 27-year-old Routh told Texas Ranger Danny Briley that he shot Kyle first and added, “I’m just sorry for what I’ve done.”
Briley testified Monday that Routh said he knew his actions were wrong.
NEWPORT, N.H. (AP) — Police in Newport, New Hampshire, say a man has been accused of shaking his 3-month-old son twice, allegedly out of aggression toward a video game system.
Jerry Carrier faces two charges of first-degree assault and was to be arraigned Tuesday. It wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer.
Police said the baby was taken from Newport to a hospital in January. Two weeks later, police said they responded to a similar incident in Charlestown; this time, the child was found unresponsive. His injuries were found to be from non-accidental trauma.
The baby is in state custody.
Police said the 26-year-old Carrier told them he shook the baby twice out of aggression toward a video game system.
HOLTON, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a 16-year-old girl was hospitalized after her car crashed on a snow-packed highway in northeastern Kansas.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says the 16-year-old girl from Bellevue, Nebraska, on Sunday night was traveling north on U.S. 75 near Holton when she lost control of her vehicle and it landed in a ditch.
The teen was wearing a seat belt and was taken to Holton Community Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Her condition wasn’t immediately known Monday morning.
Troopers say there were no passengers in her vehicle.

DENVER (AP) — Cody McLeod and Matt Duchene scored 9 seconds apart, Jarome Iginla had two assists and the Colorado Avalanche beat the slumping Arizona Coyotes 5-2 on Monday night.
Gabriel Landeskog, Tyson Barrie and Nick Holden also scored for the Avalanche. Semyon Varlamov faced only five shots through the first two periods before giving way to backup Reto Berra to start the third.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Mark Arcobello scored for Arizona, which did not manage a shot on goal in the second period. Mike McKenna made 29 saves in his first start of the season.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Roosevelt Jones made the winning layup with 1.9 seconds to lift No. 19 Butler to a 58-56 win over Creighton and avoid getting upset by the Big East’s last-place team Monday night.
The Bulldogs (19-7, 9-4) wouldn’t have been in position for Jones’ game-winner if Alex Barlow hadn’t scrambled to rebound Kellen Dunham’s missed shot a few seconds earlier. Devin Brooks missed Creighton’s last-second 3-pointer.
Dunham scored 19 points, Jones added 18 and Kameron Woods 10 for the Bulldogs, who were playing without the injured Andrew Chrabascz.
Austin Chatman and Brooks had 17 points apiece to lead Creighton (12-15, 3-11).
