Juveniles Accused of Running Child Porn Instagram Account

police-lights-redPEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (AP) — Police are urging parents in South Florida to check the online accounts of their children after three teens were accused of creating an Instagram account to solicit and post explicit photos of other minors.

Pembroke Pines police arrested two boys, ages 12 and 15, and a 13-year-old girl Thursday. They face charges of electronic transmission of child pornography.

The arrests followed a 10-week investigation.

Police say the social media account encouraged its 500 followers to post nude and sexually explicit photos of minors to “expose” them. The posts included their names and personal information.

Sgt. Drew Jacobs said numerous youths were exploited. He said detectives are likely to release more information on Friday.

Pembroke Pines is a suburb of Fort Lauderdale.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A judge has set bail for a 21-year-old man charged in connection with a triple homicide at a house party in Omaha last month.

Trenelle Miller is charged with possession of a gun by a prohibited person. On Thursday, he made his first court appearance, and Judge Susan Bazis set his bail at $100,000.

Prosecutors say Miller had a gun at the Jan. 24 party and allegedly told witnesses he was “pretty sure” he shot someone before being shot himself.

His mother said after the hearing her son didn’t have a gun at the party and didn’t shoot anyone.

Nineteen-year-old Jakela Foster, 24-year-old Latecia Fox and 26-year-old Cameron R. Harris died in the shooting. Miller was one of five other people wounded by gunfire at the party.

United Airlines to Outsource 80 Jobs at Omaha Airport

United-AirlinesOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — United Airlines has decided to outsource about 80 jobs at Omaha’s Eppley Airfield.

Airline spokesman Luke Punzenberger said Thursday that the decision was a difficult one for United executives, who have been discussing the possibility of layoffs with the International Association of Machinists Aerospace Workers. Punzenberger told Omaha television station KETV that, “when it makes financial sense, we prefer to have United employees.”

The Eppley baggage handlers and customer service workers were notified Thursday. The cuts are expected to be effective by mid-May. United says the Omaha cutbacks are among the 1,150 planned nationwide.

Grants to Be Sought to Replace Fire Hall in Nebraska Panahandle

firedptCRAWFORD, Neb. (AP) — A city council and fire board have decided they need grants to help build a replacement for their dilapidated fire hall in the Nebraska Panhandle.

The Crawford City Council and the Crawford Rural Fire board met Wednesday evening and discussed ways to pay for what could be a $3 million project in the city of about 1,000 people.

One of the firefighters in attendance said the fire hall roof could cave in as early as the next snowstorm.

Council member Skip Chubb says he thinks everyone wants a new fire hall, but “I just don’t think there is a way to fund it.”

City attorney Adam Edmund told the boards that “you can’t do a project of this size without having grant money.”

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police have begun an internal investigation to determine the reason it took a year to arrest three teenagers accused of sexual assault.

Officer Michael Pecha (PEH’-kuh) confirmed Thursday that police plan to look into the situation. No further details have been released.

ACLU of Nebraska Forms Team for Possible Prison Lawsuits

aclu-nebLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska has formed a legal team for possible lawsuits that would force the state to address prison crowding.

The lawyer’s panel announced Thursday will advise the organization on ways to address the problem through the courts.

Executive director Danielle Conrad says decades of misguided policies have created a crisis situation that compromises public safety. She says lawmakers need to look at sentencing reforms among other changes, including the state’s use of prisoner segregation.

The Prison Litigation Advisory Panel includes 11 attorneys from around the state.

Nebraska lawmakers have pledged to take steps this year to reduce crowding. The inmate population in December was 59 percent above the total design capacity of the state prisons.

Company Suspends Efforts to Seize Nebraska Land for Keystone Pipeline

keystoneOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Canadian oil pipeline company is temporarily suspending efforts to seize Nebraska land for the Keystone Pipeline XL amid a legal challenge.

A Holt County District judge issued a temporary injunction Thursday, keeping TransCanada from invoking eminent domain along the proposed Keystone Pipeline route in northern Nebraska.

TransCanada agreed to the order, hoping to get an accelerated trial schedule.

Landowners have sued over the project.

TransCanada filed legal papers in nine Nebraska counties three weeks ago to invoke eminent domain for the land that’s needed to construct, operate and maintain the pipeline. The Keystone Pipeline would carry an estimated 800,000 barrels of crude oil a day to Nebraska, where it would connect with existing pipelines headed for Gulf Coast refineries.

Another Woman Makes Plea Deal in Fremont Embezzlement Case

gavel-moreFREMONT, Neb. (AP) — A Fremont woman implicated in her father’s nearly $2.5 million embezzlement scheme has been convicted of three misdemeanor counts.

Joleen Cameron pleaded no contest on Wednesday in Dodge County District Court to theft and two counts of attempted filing of false tax returns. Prosecutors had reduced the charges from felonies in exchange for Cameron’s pleas.

The 43-year-old Cameron and 51-year-old Kathy Springer-Hesman were accused of helping Cameron’s father, Dennis Hesman, steal from his employer. The 66-year-old Hesman, who died in August, had pleaded not guilty to accusations that he created fake grain receipts at the Fremont grain elevator he ran for Gavilon, the Omaha-based commodities company.

Springer-Hesman, who is Hesman’s daughter-in-law, and Cameron are scheduled to be sentenced on March 27.
