AP Source: Miami Marlins Will Host 2017 All-Star Game

Miami Marlins ParkMIAMI (AP) — A person familiar with the decision says the Miami Marlins have been awarded the 2017 All-Star Game, and an announcement by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is planned for this week at the team’s ballpark.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the decision, first reported by The Miami Herald, had not been announced.

Miami will host the game for the first time. The Marlins were awarded the 2000 game at Pro Player Stadium and then stripped of the honor in 1998 because of uncertainty about the franchise’s future.

The Marlins moved into their new ballpark in 2012.

The All-Star Game will be played in Cincinnati this year and in San Diego in 2016, meaning a National League team will host the game in three consecutive seasons.

Nebraska Meat Processor Accused of Stealing from Food Program

hunters-helping-the-hungryRALSTON, Neb. (AP) — A meat processor in Ralston is accused of stealing from a program that provides deer meat to hungry families.

65-year-old Thomas Salistean is charged with theft and unlawful sale of game animals. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says in a court affidavit that Salistean fraudulently recorded donations to the Hunters Helping the Hungry program and illegally sold deer meat.

The affidavit says 26 of the 69 deer carcass donations Salistean reported during the 2013-2014 hunting season were either fraudulent or violated his contract with the state program or Nebraska statutes.

The program pays contracted meat processors $85 to process each deer carcass donated for the poor.

Salistean’s attorney in another case didn’t immediately return a call Wednesday from The Associated Press.

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (AP) — Opening statements are set to begin in the Texas trial of the man charged with killing Chris Kyle, the famed Navy SEAL depicted in the blockbuster movie “American Sniper.”

Former Marine Eddie Ray Routh is charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of Kyle and his friend, Chad Littlefield, two years ago at a rural shooting range. Routh’s lawyers will pursue an insanity defense. The 27-year-old faces life in prison without parole if convicted.

Attorneys are expected to make opening statements Wednesday morning in the small town of Stephenville. Prosecutors have said their first witnesses will be Kyle’s widow, Taya, and Littlefield’s mother, Judy.

The Oscar-nominated film is based Kyle’s memoir. The sniper served four tours in Iraq.

Chicago’s Little League Championship Team Stripped of Title

Jackie Robinson West Little League World SeriesCHICAGO (AP) — Little League International has stripped Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West of its national title after finding the team falsified its boundary map.

The league made the announcement Wednesday morning, saying the Chicago team violated regulations by placing players on the team who didn’t qualify because they lived outside the team’s boundaries. Little League International also suspended Jackie Robinson West manager Darold Butler from league activity.

The announcement comes after an investigation that started when a suburban coach alleged the Jackie Robinson West team violated rules by poaching top players from nearby suburbs.

Little League had said in December that an investigation into the Chicago team found no violations.

Jackie Robinson West’s championship run captured the attention of the nation and turned the all-black team into heroes in their hometown.

Carlos Boozer scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Wayne Ellington added 18 points for the Lakers, who fell to 0-5 this month.

The Kobe Bryant-less Lakers were coming off an 0-4 trip away from Staples Center because of the Grammy awards. Jeremy Lin and Wesley Johnson added 12 points each.

Embattled Nebraska Prison-Records Administrator Resigns

ne-department-of-correctionsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A prisons administrator who shared blame for hundreds of miscalculated inmate sentences has resigned from Nebraska’s corrections department.

A prisons spokesman says Kyle Poppert stepped down Monday.

Poppert served as records administrator in the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. He was initially suspended without pay for two weeks for his role in the sentencing miscalculations, which led to the early release of hundreds of inmates.

A report by the U.S. Department of Justice concluded that Poppert’s division was plagued by poor communication. Department employees told investigators they weren’t properly trained for their jobs, and couldn’t rely on Poppert to answer their questions.

Two department attorneys, George Green and Sharon Lindgren, retired from the department under the threat of being fired. Attorney Kathy Blum was suspended for one day.

Nebraska Bill Banning LGBT Discrimination Advances

lgbtLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill that would ban workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity will be debated on the floor of the Nebraska Legislature.

An eight-member legislative committee advanced the bill Tuesday 5-2, with one member not voting.

The measure by Sen. Adam Morfeld of Lincoln would prohibit job discrimination for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. A similar bill was debated last year, but blocked by a filibuster. The city of Omaha already has an ordinance in place banning discrimination against members of the LGBT community.

Committee members say they expect another filibuster this year.

Omaha Police Arrest 1 in Connection to Triple Homicide

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have arrested one man in connection to a triple homicide that occurred at a house party in Omaha last month.

Police say 21-year-old Trenelle Miller was arrested Tuesday on charges of possession of a gun by a prohibited person.

According to a news release, an arrest warrant had been issued for Miller following the fatal Jan. 24 shooting. Nineteen-year-old Jakela Foster, 24-year-old Latecia Fox and 26-year-old Cameron R. Harris were killed.

Miller was one of five other people wounded by gunfire at the party. He was taken to Nebraska Medical Center for treatment and was later released.

Officials say investigation is ongoing.
