Storm Partner With Children’s Heart Foundation

Children's Heart Foundation Nebraska Chapter CHFKEARNEY, Neb. – On Friday night, the Children’s Heart Foundation and the Tri-City Storm are coming together to be part of Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.

Many families in the Tri-Cities have been affected by Congenital Heart Defects (CHD). The Children’s Heart Foundation is a non-profit organization solely focused on funding research for CHD.

Operated fully by volunteers, all funds raised will go towards the most promising research to advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of congenital heart defects.

“Congenital Heart Defect Awareness week is Feb. 7-14, but we need to remember these families that are affected every day of the year,” said Kristi Unick, President of the Nebraska Chapter of the Children’s Heart Foundation. “Creating awareness of CHD will in return assist us in raising funds for our research.”

The Children’s Heart Foundation is selling discounted adult tickets for $12 to Friday’s game with the Omaha Lancers, with the Storm providing a donation on each of the sold seats.

You can purchase your discounted tickets by calling 402.875.0231 or email chfne@childrensheartfoundation.org. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

“We saw this as a win-win project and an organization to align our brand,” said Storm President Greg Shea. “As a result, over 200 supporters will be in attendance on Fridaynight.”

One in 100 babies are born with a CHD, over 40,000 children per year. Congenital heart defects are common and deadly, yet CHD research is grossly under-funded relative to the prevalence of the disease. More than 50 percent of children born with a CHD will require at least one invasive surgery in their lifetime.

USPS to Relocate North Platte Post Office

uspsDespite efforts by business leaders and community members, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has decided to go ahead with their plan to relocate the North Platte Main Post Office, 300 East Third Street, to the location of their Distribution and Processing Center at 1302 Industrial Avenue.

At a news conference, Monday morning, Mayor Dwight Livingston and City Administrator Jim Hawks distributed a letter from the USPS, stating their intentions.

In the letter, the USPS said they were appreciative of the community and their involvement in the “process.”

Officials said after consideration of the comments received from the public meeting in December 2014, and further assessment, the USPS has decided to proceed with the relocation project.

Any person may appeal the decision within 30 days.  Appeals must be postmarked by Monday, March 9.

Hawks said, while anyone can file an appeal, the City will lead the way when going through the appeal process.  That being said, Hawks encourages all community members to voice their concern to the USPS.

Appeals can be directed to:

$485 Million Powerball Jackpot is 5th Largest in US History

powerball

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Powerball jackpot has climbed to $485 million, making Wednesday night’s drawing the fifth largest prize in U.S. history.

It’s been more than two months since someone won the Powerball jackpot, so the prize has been gradually growing from its $40 million starting point.

The last time Powerball grew nearly so large was February 2014.

Because of strong sales, lottery officials Tuesday raised the estimated jackpot from $450 million to $485 million.

Lottery officials are quick to point out that the game is for fun and a chance to dream. They note the chance of winning a Powerball jackpot is about 1 in 175 million.

Powerball revenue has been down slightly during a drought of jackpots, but officials say this big prize has caused sales to surge.

St. Paul Council Vote Saves Brick Section of Main Street

st-paul-nebraskaST. PAUL, Neb. (AP) — The City Council has rejected a proposal to pour a new concrete pavement to replace a brick section of St. Paul’s main street.

The council voted 3-2 against a $1.5 million paving project that would have included removal of bricks from a stretch of Howard Avenue west of Ninth Street. Other brick streets in the downtown would have remained.

The vote came after a discussion about St. Paul’s brick streets, which have been a part of the community for 115 years or more. Several residents said removing bricks from any city streets would hurt the historical atmosphere of St. Paul and harm tourism.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 36-year-old man accused of killing someone whose dismembered body was found in a ravine north of Omaha has been convicted of manslaughter.

Online court records say John Moniz on Monday pleaded no contest to manslaughter and to being a habitual criminal. Prosecutors reduced the original charge of first-degree murder in exchange for Moniz’s pleas. Prosecutors say Moniz killed 52-year-old Delbert Freemont Jr., whose torso, arms and legs were found Dec. 9 in Washington County.

Authorities found blood spatters on the ceiling and walls of Freemont’s home, and tests confirmed the blood belonged to Freemont. Moniz and his girlfriend had been living with Freemont until shortly before his death.

Moniz’s sentencing is scheduled for April 8.
