Plan Would Turn Lincoln’s Old Auditorium Into Marketplace

pershing-auditoriumLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Under a plan still in the draft stage, the Lincoln’s old Pershing auditorium would be given new life as a modern food market with space for restaurants, a greenhouse and loft apartments.

The plan was given to a mayoral committee last week. The city also is considering tearing down the auditorium, which closed in August after more than 57 years of operation. This week the city has opened up the building to people who want to buy pieces of the Pershing at auction.

The plan calls for renovating the auditorium and creating an administrative structure for a regional food hub to connect ag producers, consumers and distributors. The plan is being proposed by the Joslyn Institute for Sustainable Communities.

Nebraskan Accused of Hate Crime Hoax Denies Allegations

Charlie Rogers
Charlie Rogers

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln woman convicted of an anti-gay hate crime hoax denies that she’s violated terms of her probation.

A judge on Monday set a March 13 hearing for 36-year-old Charlie Rogers. She faces up to a year behind bars if a judge revokes the probation.

Rogers is a former University of Nebraska-Lincoln basketball player who was convicted of lying to police about being attacked by masked men who carved anti-gay slurs into her skin. She has said she’s a lesbian.

Prosecutors said Monday that Rogers didn’t complete the required 250 hours of community service, pay court costs or report Jan. 15 to begin her 90-day jail sentence. Rogers denied the allegations.

Nebraska Senator Again Tries to Repeal Motorcycle Helmet Law

helmet-lawLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska senator hopes to win a decades-old debate with a familiar bill that would let motorcyclists ride without a helmet.

Lawmakers heard public testimony Monday on the proposal to repeal Nebraska’s 1989 mandatory helmet law.

Sen. Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins says he introduced the bill because the state should let motorcyclists decide. The law’s opponents say Nebraska loses millions of dollars in revenue from bikers who avoid Nebraska.

Advocates say helmet usage has consistently been shown to reduce fatalities.

The National Transportation Safety Board says more than 80 people died in motorcycle accidents in Nebraska between 2009 and 2013.

Last year a version of the bill that would have exempted riders older than 21 from the helmet law was blocked by a filibuster.

US Measles Count Rises to 121; Most Linked to Disneyland

cdcNEW YORK (AP) — Health officials say the number of measles cases in the nation is up to 121 so far this year.

All but 18 of the cases are tied to an outbreak that started at the Disneyland amusement park in California.

Until recently, it was unusual to see more than 100 cases a year in the United States. Measles are most commonly seen in winter and early spring, brought in by foreign visitors or by U.S. residents who pick up the highly contagious virus overseas.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the numbers Monday, adding 19 cases to the 102 reported as of last week.

Measles causes a fever, runny nose, cough and rash all over the body. In rare cases, it can be deadly.

Death Toll from General Motors Ignition Switches Rises to 52

general-motorsDETROIT (AP) — New figures show at least 52 people have died and 79 have been injured in crashes involving General Motors cars with defective ignition switches.

Attorney Kenneth Feinberg, who was hired by GM to compensate victims, updated the totals Monday.

Feinberg says on an Internet site that he has received 4,237 claims for payments from GM as of Friday. The fund has deemed 131 as eligible, and 501 are not eligible.

GM knew about faulty switches in Chevrolet Cobalts and other small cars for more than a decade but didn’t recall them until February. The switches can slip out of the “on” position and cause cars to stall unexpectedly.

The fund stopped taking claims on Jan. 31, but some that were postmarked by the deadline arrived last week.

Glen Dee “Red” Barner

barner

Glen Dee “Red” Barner, age 89, of Stapleton passed away February 7, 2015 at Centennial Park Retirement Village in North Platte. Red was born on July 31, 1925 in Stapleton, Ne, the second of eight children born to Chet and Edith (Utterback) Barner. He graduated from Baker Rural High School in Stapleton, NE in 1944. After a brief stay in Californian, Red moved back to Stapleton in 1947. He married Leona Cash on June 23, 1948. The couple raised 6 kids, Joleen, Don, Glenda, Teresa, Kyle, and Trent. Lenona passed away in July 2010 after 62 years of marriage.
Red lived 87 of his 89 years 10 miles west of Stapleton on the family farm. As a self proclaimed “Old Sandhiller” the Sandhills were his home. Red loved farming and ranching. He still had a few cows 2 weeks before he passed. In addition to farming and ranching, he had a few other occupations in order to make ends meet- custom corn shelling, shearing sheep, and he was a licensed electrician. He had a strong belief in service to his community, and was involved in many organizations, which included, the School Board, Elks Club, Fire Department, County Commissioner for 24 years, and Logan County Fair Board President for 35 years, starting in 1953. Red got a kick out of “educating” the city folk, whether relatives or boy/girl friends as to how life was on the farm! He enjoyed the mountains and visited Montana many times. Red kept his quick wit one line humor right to the end.
Rodeo was Red’s first love. He entered his first rodeo in 1944. The arena “fence” was made up of parked cars. His bareback horse made it out between two parked cars, he got his rigging back a week later. Red competed regularly statewide, as well as out of state from 1944 through the mid 60’s. His regular events were, Bareback Bronc Riding, Bull Dogging (steer wrestling), Bull Riding, and the Wild Horse Race. He won numerous events at numerous rodeos, including the Nebraska Amateur Cowboy Association All Around Title and Bull Dogging Title in 1953. He then dusted off his bull rope and bareback rig for the first Old Timers rodeo in Hyannis in 1974. He continued to compete and place every year in the dogging at the Old Timers Rodeo until winning the Bull Dogging title with a time of 7 flat at the age of 52. Red helped produce rodeos throughout the state in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, while working for a couple different stock contractors, doing everything from “flanking” to Arena director. He liked the interaction with the cowboys, but more importantly he liked the handling and the performance of the stock, mainly the bucking horses and bulls. He followed rodeo right to the end, staying up late to watch the National Finals Rodeo in December. Red was a true “Sandhills Cowboy”.
Survivors include daughters, Joleen Blake, Glenda (Jack) Krebs all of North Platte, and Teresa (Steve) Facka of Dickens, NE; sons, Don (Joan) Barner of Wallace, Kyle (Veda) Barner of Big Sky MT, and Trent (Marissa) Barner of Reno, NV; grandchildren, Casey Blake and Allyson (Mark) Dennis, Jay Dee Barner, Andy Barner, Koby Krebs, Justin Krebs, Shane (Ashley) Mathers, Malery Mathers, Tad Mathers, Stacy (Dan) Iske, and Deonna Smith; several great and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma May Christian of AZ, and Pam Wright of Merna, NE; brothers, Myron (Jan) Barner of North Platte, Byron (Elaine) Barner of Lincoln, Ne, and Lemoyne Barner of CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leona; brother and sister-in-law, Earl Dean and Leni Barner; sister and brother-in-law, June and Dean Hanna; and a son-in-law, Ken Blake.
Memorials may be made to the Loup Valley Cemetery and online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com.
Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at the Loup Valley Cemetery in Stapleton, NE, on land donated by his grandfather, with the Reverend Harun Gatobu officiating. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. today, February 10, 2015 at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte which is in charge of arrangements.

Huskers Announce Tip Time for Regular-Season Finale with Ohio State

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – The No. 22 Nebraska women’s basketball team will tip-off its regular-season finale against Ohio State at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday, March 1 at 4 p.m.

The game time had been listed as TBA on all schedules before the announcement by the Big Ten Conference and Big Ten Network on Monday, Feb. 9. The game will be televised live nationally by BTN.

Single-game tickets for the Ohio State game are on sale right now through the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office at Huskers.com or by calling 1-800-8-BIG-RED. That game will be Senior Day for the Huskers, when Emily Cady (Seward, Neb.), Brandi Jeffery (Vacherie, La.), Tear’a Laudermill (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Hailie Sample (Flower Mound, Texas) will be honored for their significant contributions over the past four seasons in the Nebraska program.

Nebraska’s four senior starters have helped the Big Red to an average of 23 victories per season over the past four years and are pursuing their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. All four seniors have played in more than 115 games in their Husker careers and all four have started at least 30 games.

The No. 22 Huskers enter this Thursday’s home game with No. 14 Iowa at Pinnacle Bank Arena with a 17-6 overall record and a 7-5 Big Ten mark. It will be Nebraska’s third straight game against a team currently ranked in the top 20 by the Associated Press.

In addition to BTN televising Nebraska’s regular-season finale against Ohio State, the Huskers also added a BTN game at Indiana on Saturday, Feb. 21 in a previous wildcard announcement by the network. The game at Bloomington will tip-off at 11 a.m. central.

With the addition of the Indiana and Ohio State games, Nebraska will have a school-record 16 regular-season games televised nationally in 2014-15, including 11 games on the Big Ten Network.

NBA All-Star Weekend Brings Basketball’s Best to Big Apple

NBA All-Star Game 2015 New York BrooklynNEW YORK (AP) — Think basketball is bad in New York now? Marv Albert remembers when fans would go to Madison Square Garden and wouldn’t even stick around to watch the Knicks.

The days of NBA doubleheaders there are long gone — a good thing, so both of New York’s bumbling ballclubs can’t lose at the same place on the same day.

Fans in the Big Apple remain just as passionate about good basketball as they were then, when the chance to see someone like Bill Russell made the opening act the main event. They get their chance this weekend when the NBA All-Star festivities come to town, and locals say the enthusiasm can’t be diminished no matter how many games the Knicks or Nets have lost.

“I don’t think it matters because you have all these great stars coming there and I think it’s going to be a wild scene, both Saturday in Brooklyn and then Sunday at the Garden,” said Albert, a New York native and longtime Knicks broadcaster who will call the game on TNT.

Breaking from what had become standard procedure of taking the mid-winter showcase to a warm-weather city, the NBA decided to stay home in 2015 and show off two of its flashiest arenas: Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, opened in 2012, and famed Madison Square Garden, recently renovated over the course of three years, and both with $1 billion price tags.

The buildings may be magical, but the basketball is miserable. The Knicks are headed toward their worst season ever with a 10-41 record entering Monday, while the Nets were 21-29, though still in the playoff race thanks to the mediocrity of the Eastern Conference.

Subway stations and trains have been decorated with pictures of the NBA’s best, but there’s nothing the league can do to clean up the Knicks and Nets. No matter, says Commissioner Adam Silver.

“I know that as a New Yorker, I don’t think interest in people’s favorite teams wanes necessarily because the team isn’t successful in a particular year,” he said last month at a press conference before a game in London, before the Knicks showed they were equally inept on the other side of the Atlantic.

“So I expect tremendous excitement around the game and the festivities in New York, certainly based on the number of requests I’m getting for tickets. There’s no lack of interest in New York.”

Brooklyn gets the Friday and Saturday events, All-Star Saturday being highlighted by a 3-point contest featuring Golden State teammates Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, and Atlanta sharpshooter Kyle Korver. The game Sunday is at MSG, “the world’s most famous arena” where Joe Frazier beat Muhammad Ali in the “Fight of the Century,” and Willis Reed gamely limped out of the tunnel to play in Game 7 against the Lakers and spark the Knicks to the 1970 NBA championship.

The building remains revered by today’s players, no matter how bad the Knicks team is that’s waiting when they get there.

“Having the game here at MSG is special and to be an All-Star and suiting up and taking the floor here is going to be a memory for a long time,” Curry said Saturday after the Warriors beat the Knicks.

Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony has kept playing through a sore left knee and all the losses in part because he can’t wait to play in the All-Star game — perhaps his last highlight this season. Even though he’s going to his workplace, he won’t be thinking about work.

“At the end of the day it’s still an achievement, still an accomplishment. I can’t go into that weekend thinking about kind of, what we’ve been going through throughout the regular season with the Knicks,” he said. “It’s a just a moment kind of to get away from that for a minute and just enjoy that weekend.”

Anthony was born in Brooklyn. So was Michael Jordan, the game’s MVP in 1998 the last time MSG hosted it. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA’s career scoring leader, is another New Yorker.

So the city has a tradition of basketball excellence that will never go away no matter how much the Knicks or Nets chip away at it. All-Star weekend is the next chapter.

“Regardless of what the Knicks or the Nets are doing, the city is the Mecca of basketball,” said TNT analyst Kenny Smith, who grew up in Queens before winning two NBA titles in Houston.

“I think that the city will be excited, regardless of what the Knicks, the Nets, St. John’s, Fordham University or any other teams are doing. It’s a city game. We own that and we love it, and we relish the fact that we are that.”
