Wilkie Downs Waterloo With OT Goal

tcstormWATERLOO, Ia. – After 62 minutes of scoreless hockey, Chris Wilkie gave the Tri-City Storm (24-10-5) their tenth consecutive victory with an overtime-winning goal at 2:13 of the extra frame. The 1-0 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks (14-21-4) was Tri-City’s first overtime win of the season and their first win at Young Arena since Feb. 18, 2008.

Storm goaltender Jared Rutledge earned his first shutout of the season, making 32 saves in the win. Wilkie’s tally was his 23rd of the year, and came with assists from Mason Appleton and Mattias Goransson.

The current winning streak has tied the team’s all-time record, which was set back on March 5, 2004.

Cale Morris was also exceptional for Waterloo on the night, finishing with 25 saves in the game.

In addition to the lack of goals, each team only gave the other a single power play opportunity, of which neither squad could capitalize on.

Tri-City has hold of second place in the USHL’s Western Conference with 53 total points. They remain four points behind first-place Sioux City.

The Storm will close out three games in three days on Sunday afternoon with a 3:05 p.m. start against Waterloo.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Nolan Aibel and Chase Berger, along with defenseman Jason Krych…

Nebraska Board of Ed Member Standing Firm on Refusal to Resign

Pat McPherson
Pat McPherson

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Embattled Nebraska State Board of Education member Pat McPherson is again insisting he will not resign, this time following a verbal tug-of-war between his supporters and those who say he should resign over racist comments made in his now defunct blog.

The 17 people who spoke during the public comment period of Friday’s Education Board’s meeting were nearly equally divided in their support for and opposition to McPherson.

Many, including other Education Board members, have called on McPherson to step down following several blog posts referred to President Barack Obama as a “half-breed.”

McPherson, a Republican, has disavowed the posts and said he did not write them. He reiterated after Friday’s public comments that he will not resign.

Dubnyk gets Another Shutout as Wild beat Avalanche 1-0

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Charlie Coyle scored and Devan Dubnyk stopped 18 shots for his fourth shutout in nine starts with Minnesota, leading the Wild to a 1-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night for their fifth straight win.

With just over 5 minutes left in the third period, Dubnyk turned away five Colorado shots on a power play to preserve the lead as Wild fans chanted “Dooooob” for their recently-acquired goalie.

One of those five shots was a wrister by Matt Duchene that sneaked between Dubnyk’s legs, but Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin swiped it out before it crossed the line.

Since being acquired from Arizona rade from Arizona on Jan. 14, Dubnyk is 7-1 with a 1.30 goals-against average to help the Wild climb back into the playoff race.

Minnesota has won five straight in regulation for the first time since March 25, 2013.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills have agreed in principle to sign Richie Incognito, the offensive guard who has been out of football since 2013 after being one of the central figures in the Miami Dolphins’ bullying scandal.

The Bills announced the move in a two-paragraph release Saturday night.

Incognito has nine seasons of NFL experience, and briefly played for the Bills in 2009. He has not played since being suspended and missing the final eight games of the 2013 season.

The discipline came after an NFL investigation determined Incognito and two other Dolphins offensive linemen engaged in persistent harassment of teammate Jonathan Martin, who left the team. Martin spent last season with San Francisco.

NY Mom Charged with Threatening to Blow Up Daughter’s School

police-lights-redNEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say a mother got so angry when told that her daughter had failed a New York state exam that she threatened to bomb the school.

Karen Shearon pleaded not guilty when she was arraigned Friday on a misdemeanor aggravated harassment charge.

A court complaint says the 48-year-old told a Staten Island high school guidance counselor Tuesday she was “going to blow up the school.”

She says a school representative called her at work repeatedly that day.

The Staten Island Advance says Shearon says she “never made such a phone call” and suggested the school would have been evacuated if she had indeed made such a threat.

The city Department of Education said the school immediately notified police of the threat.

Study Dings Nebraska’s Attempt to Privatize Child Welfare

DHHSLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new study at the request of Nebraska lawmakers says Nebraska’s attempt to privatize its child welfare system has produced no measurable benefits.

The study compared results achieved by state child welfare workers and by the Nebraska Families Collaborative, the private agency that manages child welfare cases in the Omaha area.

The study found no cost savings and no significant difference in outcomes for children and families.

State lawmakers commissioned the study last year, as part of a bill authorizing the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to extend its contract with the collaborative into 2015.
